City Living vs. Great Outdoors

Hi all,

I will be moving to Hong Kong soon, and on my last couple of trips to Hong Kong I have been considering where to relocate with my family. I have visited most of the areas of Hong Kong that we are considering (Mid Levels, Pok fu Lam, Stanley, Kowloon, Kings Park, Clearwater Bay, Sai Kung, and DB).

My wife is currently pregnant, and the issue we are grappling with is location vs. lifestyle.

We are attracted to the surrounds of the NT and southside of HK island, but I am concerned that these areas may be isolated for a new mum with a newborn (this is our first also). On the other hand, is living inner city in mid levels or on the Kowloon side workable?

I will be working on the Kowloon side in TST, and we are thinking that the Kings Park area of Kowloon might be a compromise?

Has anyone faced the similar situation? Would love to hear your experiences.

Thanks Island Hopper,

thanks for the tip. Kowloon Tong is definitely an area of interest.

So far in "Kowloon" I have seen the developments above Kowloon MTR, and the Kings Park area. I will add Kowloon Tong / Yau Yat Tsuen and Beacon Hill to the search.

thanks again.

Beware in town of the high levels of pollution with a new born baby perhaps take a look at these websites which might help guide you in that way.

Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay are huge expat areas, your wife will not feel isolated. Its the best place to live in HK, Nice village feel in Sai Kung, the staff in the shops and restaurants get to know you, makes for good personal service. Good walking, beaches, laid back lifestyle. Lots of friends for the kids. Several good kindies, good primary school. Only 30 mins drive from central.

Thanks cd for the great information,

are there any shops and restaurants in Clearwater Bay, or are these all located in Sai Kung?

No its now an English run kindergarden.

Apart from PNS in Clearwater Bay, its all residential. But its only a few minutes drive to Hang Hau, and Metro City in Po Lam.

A few more things to keep in mind with "the great outdoors": mosquitoes & cockroaches.

Having previously lived out past the "Wishing Tree" along Lam Kam rd, Tai Po – I don't miss these little beasts.

I hate to say this and throw spanner in the works but I love the town living. Have done so all my time here...and with kids. i guess it's what yor used to. I've looked seriously at all the 'country' areas and honestly they weren't for me. I love convenience and my kids health is fine thanks!
