Sad Sack is right.

HK is not a place for backpackers, I think.

Unless you know someone here, or can find arrangement for an exchange..for instance you spend days here, and your host spends in Vietnam, that may be possible.

But not sure if you can find one, even.

Accomodation can be expensive yes but HK needn't be expenisve at all!

There is heaps to do here if you enjoy hiking, temples, markets etc The New Territories is a great place to explore if you like outdoor stuff and local markets and places.

Mong Kok is interesting for touristy markets, cheap shoes etc!

You can always find very cheap local restaurants and noodle shops to get your fill too :o)

The beach may be ok during mid-day, its around 20c at the moment but has been dropping to around 13-15 at the moment so not really sunbathing per se but still mild!

I would suggest maybe a week and spend the rest exploring Macau and CHina if you can. Where do you plan to go after?

There are many beautiful beaches in HK, especially if you like hiking and can get to the ones off the beaten track, especially around the Sai Kung peninsular. But agree, January is probably the worst month weather wise in HK.

Agree with ems2000, HK can be as expensive or as cheap as you like. There are thousands of noodle restaurants where a bowl of noodles will set you back $30, snacks from the bakeries for lunch etc. Many restaurants do lunch time specials for less than $100. Public transport is cheap to explore the New Territories. There is lots of hiking on Lantau too.

There are lots of very cheap, grotty hotels around too, in places like TST and Mong Kok, don't know how you'd find out the names and rates though.

Try the YHA hostels too which I have heard are very good...

Also the YMCA which is more expensive but many people choose it over hotels...

This is also a good site for searching hostels & B&B's, prices in US$. Would avoid anthing in ChungKing mansions though like Sad Sack said, not all are great!

Or even just arrive and take a walk around, you'll find somehing. I walked to the bank today down Tak Shing st in Jordan, a small side street, noticed that there were signs for 4 small cheap hotels down that 1 road alone, the Noble hotel, the South and North hotel to name 2. Have know idea what they're like, probably pretty grotty, but just of nathen rd, and with lots of shops and restaurants near by. But if all you're after is a bed...
