...amongst the Classifieds someone is selling 2 USED light bulbs for $30, and then there's the $19 toilet roll holder. Are these people serious or is there a competition to advertise the most ridiculous item for the lowest price?!

There should be a minimum price say $500 HKD for items posted or Ed can have them posted under BARGAIN BIN!

Spider99, I've seen that advertisement you are talking about but tell me where you can buy a 2003 Maserati for $250K? Which market price is that? As I'm highly interested.

A minimum price would not have a lot of meaning,

someone could post an item says its price is $500 but willing to negotiate, and I don't think ed has the manpower to police every item, nor do I think he would be inclined to either.

I am not sure how the classifieds work I dont really use them and whether people pay to post items or what, but I think it would be easier just to get rid of silly items rather than try and dictate minnimum prices.

Being the capitalist that you say you are DaHKGKid , you of all people should know people would negotiate their way around arbitrary price restrictions.

Second hand light bulbs is ridiculous, easy to spot, easy to get rid of, no need for any additional monitoring and no arbitrary restrictions on the prices people charge for what they want to sell. i.e. I think ed could filter out someone a lot more easily if they were trying to sell the Taj Mahal or a second hand light bulb, then try and get involved in the discussion for how much they are worth if some poor jub really did think those items were for sale.

Price ranges have been used in classified ads for decades. I works on matching needs to budgets. It is not unlike the traditional layers of retail in place today for both bricks and clicks and mortar.

Anyone looking at a ridiculous post could easily dismiss it making the search much more positive and for the most part remove rogue posters altogether!

Furthermore, you get what you pay for so paying to post your high quality items at a nominal price (whereas the value of the goods exceed $500 min.) would deter both misuse and have posters create more acceptable thus appealing ads and sell off product more quickly.

Why is my 50" LCD posted below an ad for a $50 Electrical Power Bar???

There is no policing when the model polices itself. I have been overall happy with both the buying and selling of goods on Asiaxpat. I would be willing to pay for my ads if it gave my potential buyers a much more attractive experience and as buyer welcome a much easier search. FYI, use the search tool it really works!

Currently we must pay for an ad posted on cars-boats-motorcycles. It is split nicely into private and dealers as it should and monitored for good reason.

Ed, what is the minimum fee you need to charge to make electronic payment for placing an ad worth while is the main question?

I would easily pay $100HKD per post for items over $5000HKD. Why not if it increased the potential sell.

minimum prices rarely have any meaning if ever.

The only real way to work it is to have a fee for the sale item which makes the notion of posting a used light bulb knowing pretty much what price you could get for it so ridiculous only a fool would do it, and even then some people would still do it because there are fools in this world.

Ultimately if Ed did that, it would reduce his traffic flow because people would look for alternative channels the more goods in a market the more customers are attracted, and on the internet the more traffic that generates. Some of it casual some of it will be sticky.

Far easier and more profitable for this business model to charge low or no fees and edit out ridiculous items.

In the end, you post your item on the places where you think a sale is going to be generated and if you look at craigslist for example or even ebay for that matter, they charge reasonable fees or are free and don't even bother deleting ridiculous items, generating large amounts of both buyers and sellers which is necessary to sustain a market.

If ed wants to get rid of the fools it would be better for him to delete the ridiculous and keep posting charges low or even free.

No plans to charge for any other categories of the classifieds - we are generating enough cash to keep the Molson fridge full.

Molson for sale! Now that's what I'm looking for in the Classified.

Ed, here's a question after living in HK for about 6 years. What Molson is in that bottle. I used to be able to buy Canadian from City Super but the "Molson" they sell in town seems to be either Export or something else.
