Car Pooling should be bigger in Hong Kong

Since coming to HK over 4 years ago my wife and I have had two cars, both when we lived in Kowloon Tong. We now stay in mid-levels West where we do not have a car. The imminent arrival of a baby means that we are looking again at the prospect of needing a car. I would love to not have to consider this but we do want to give the baby the best that we can afford and taking all of the baby gear and a stroller on the MTR on the weekend to walk out in a country park is not a happy prospect.

It strikes me that a great option would be to "car share". When I look in the car parks around here and see so many cars which are only used seldom I think that there should be a "pool" system but I have not heard of one.

Does anyone car share?

If so, how did you set it up?

Paul,

Many of my friends and neighbours do share cars but usually with family ie brothers/sisters may club together to buy one and often the car will be a 7 or 8 seat SUVs, used to take kids and grandparents out to the country or a restaurant weekends/holidays.

The main problems with a car pool is agreeing when to go/return and where to go. The logistics are not easy! It may be easier to use taxis and go to places on HK island where you can get a return taxi relatively easily ie The Peak, Repulse Bay, Pok Fu Lam reservoir etc.

Thanks for the comments Katana and Cara,

I agree that there are some real issues but in a world that is supposedly becoming more conscious about resource use, they should not be seen as insurmountable.

I would like to think that I can remain flexible but let's see when the bub comes along!

My husband car shares. We have our own car, then 4 guys that all work in the same place brought a car between them about 3 years ago. All costs for tax, repairs etc are split 4 ways. They each put in a set amount each week for petrol. They all go to work together and leave together, it helps to make sure they all leave on time. The person furthest away usually has it over the weekend, but if any one of the others needs in then they keep it and use it.. It works very well.
