I have a sister with Caeliac diet requirements who will visit HK, I'm wondering if there is much available food-wise here? Specialized supermarket supplies, restuarants?

Hi Applepup,
There is a couple of health food stores on Lyndhurst Terrace that sell cereals and biscuits but unfortunately there are not many other options available. The vietnamse restaurants in Elgin St use rice noodles in the soups and the rice paper rolls are brilliant.. Cheers

I contacted LITTEL GIANT Tel. 2573-3610 that speciales in gluten-free products and they can help. Their website is www.littlegianthk.com, and located at 15th Fl. Chung Wai Commercial Building 447-449 Lockhart Rd.
Hope this helps. The Community Advice Bureau (CAB)

Applepup I am a coeliac. If yr sister is visiting the best thing for her is to bring her own food actually, we all do that most of the times when we travel with this condfiotion. 360 in Central has some GF supplies (very very expensive though) such as cookies, cake and pancake mixes, cereal and some stir-in sauces. (it's all scattered around and not in one isle or anything like that). They sometimes have gluten-free sausages and burger meat. Just tell her to be careful, people here do not understand coeliac, so they will tell you that things are gluten-free to save their face, because they have no idea what you are talking about. Don't really bother trying to explain either - it never really got me anywhere to be honest, language and nutritional knowledge are both barriers here.
When eating out steaks and steam veg are probably her safest option I am afraid, I haven't really found a reliable restaurant that would be able to get more creative. But I am quite strict as I get sick if I eat the tiniest amount of gluten.
Not sure where she is visiting from but if you find Australian products in grocery stores, they must declare all wheat and gluten sources, so the labels are the most reliable. - Oh, talking about labels, make sure she peels off the HK ones stack over the original ingerdient lists, as the HK ones are totally unreliable.
Don't forget coeliac is unknown in South East Asian population hence the total ignorance of it.

Yes, go to Little Giant in Causeway Bay. They have a decent selection of GFCF foods and also do delivery if you spend enough. I agree with expatinhk, bringing some of her own food is probably the way to go.
