If you can afford to, join one of the many recreational clubs. Or, if you so inclined, look around for a compatible, and welcoming, church community.

Where are you located?

I would suggest joining the At Home course at the YWCA - http://www.esmdywca.org.hk/PageContent.aspx?pageid=Hong-Kong-Expatriates-Home

They offer a huge range of courses from hikes, cookery classes, languages, the list is endless. I made many friends through taking their courses and just talking to people - the hikes were good because you really get a chance to get to talk to people. I always suggest to my clients to do the At Home course and all have made friends through it.

Also, there is the American Womens Assoc - www.awa.org.hk - and you don't need to be american to join.

The Community Advice Bureau have a really good guide book full of useful info about Hong Kong - maybe your relocation company (if you had one) has given this to you already.

I would also suggest going into Bookazine or Dymocks - big booksellers in HK and get the Hong Kong Taxi Guide - it has all the major shopping areas, buildings etc written in chinese characters to help you in a taxi.

Another useful website - http://www.hkoutdoors.com/

Hope this helps and welcome to Hong Kong.
