I will bring the TV into town as I live far out in the New Territories.
It is a Samsung.

I did. I can't bring the TV to them, so they have to come out. They won't come out to inspect (due to location ) so are basically proposing to replace all the innards with new parts ordered from Korea - total cost is not much less than buying a new box - which I am doing.
I would just like to find a local repair shop as I believe the fault is pretty simple and they could repair it with second hand parts which seems a better alternative than simply chucking it in the bin.

I have a problem with my plasma screen too it a Fujitsu model and when I contacted Fujitsu, the lone engineer in Hong Kong told me that my model is no longer manufactured and it would cost more to repair and it would be cheaper to buy a new one.
Mine is four years old and the problem that I have with it, is that a line suddenly appeared down the middle of the screen, thus dividing the screen into two.
The guy also went on to tell me that Fujitsu dont manufacture or produce plasma screens now, as they have moved over to LCD technology.
So like you, I am stuck with a watching a plasma screen divided into two or to throw it out.

or find a local shop with second hand parts. Should be able to fix it for not too much - or at least give a view if it is worth repairing or not.
