I am looking at car seats right now for our soon to be born baby. Some of our friends have recommended one for an infant til he/she turns 1 yr old then another car seat for later. Maxi cosi seems to be a popular brand. Can I have your recommendations? Thanks.

i opted for one that is suitable from birth to 4 years. i just think why spend extra money on a car seat that can only be used for 1 year. my friends also told me the convenience of having the infant seat so u can tote the baby around without waking the baby up. but i think that's only true during the first couple of months. once the baby gets heavier.....u wouldn't want to be toting the baby around (espeically if u have a big baby)! hahaha.
we have a britax and so far ithink it's pretty user friend and the baby seems comfy in it. i had to get a head support for it though cause it doesn't have a very snug area for the head (but that's only like $50).
Snug versions are some of the japanese brands Aprica, Combi and Recaro seats. they have head rests and the seat has removeable padding that really holds the baby in, which is important during the first couple of months when baby is still quite floppy.
good luck searching!

We have the Maxi Cosi Cabriofix infant car seat to go with the Quinny Zapp stroller. It's a great system, but my only gripe is that the fabric doesn't breathe very well, and my baby ended up being very sweaty on his backside. Maxi Cosi does offer infant car seats with a cotton cover as opposed to a synthetic cover, although the color choices may not be as varied. I've seen the cotton ones sold at Jusco, and when they're having their baby sale, the price is very competitive ($300 cheaper than Bumps to Babes).
Once my son grew out of the infant car seat at seven months, we got the Maxi Cosi Priori convertible car seat. We also changed strollers because the seat on the Zapp can't recline. However, it's not a big deal since we're expecting our second one and will be able to use the infant system again.
Another car seat that we found on the market after we purchased ours was the Combi Zeus, which can be used at birth and can also pivot so that you can easily place your baby in the seat. There are review videos on youtube where you can see how this works. It's ingenious, but apparently, it's also bulky and much more pricey.
BTW, thanks again for your input on the amnio - I got mine done, and my results are okay! Good luck in your last few weeks.

Michelle, Thanks for your help.
Blueapestries, Thanks for your help. Although it seems to be a waste of money to get one that is only good for infants, we may go with this option. It will make us feel better about it during the first few months when the baby needs to lie down more. Glad to meet you on this forum. HF

I think you're right, havefaith. I bought one for 0 to 5 years that ha dwon all sorts of consumer and safety prizes and stuff, and it turned out it was really not suitable for new borns at all. So I bought a maxi cosy, then switched to the first one when bb reached the Maxicosi's weight limit.
Whatever you buy, make sure it's not just the best and saftest seat, but that it's also the best for your car, this is just as important.

Get an infant seat to begin with. Went the 0-4 route with child #1 and she was an absolute nightmare in the car. Hated it. Had the infant seat for #2 and he was quite good in the car. Can't say definitely that it was the seat, but #2 was so much more comfortable---it's much easier to position an infant in an infant seat. We've always owned Britax products but Maxicosi is also quite good.

Oh, and infant seat is quite handy when baby falls asleep in the car. You don't have to disturb him/her when you arrive at your destination.

I'll chime in with the rest. Buy an infant seat first. Sure, you CAN use a 0-5 seat directly but it's no fun at all.

We had the maxi cosi and it attaches to our Quinny Buzz stroller and love them both. Baby now too big for maxi cosi so we have gone for a Sit n' Stroll as we don't have a car so the Sit n' Stroll is great to convert to a temporary stroller between taxis and home.

Car seats for older babies (or the 0-4 ones) are obviously bulkier/heavier so I would only go for that option if you plan to use the car seat only in your own car and leave it there. Otherwise, go for the infant seat first. Babies grow quickly and carrying an older baby in a car seat can become quite heavy! We had the maxi cosi cabrio fix and that one is perfect in taxis and attaches to many push chairs (with a small adapter that you only need to buy and attach once).

Even then a baby seat is much easier. In the first few months when babies are quite "wobbly" installing them in a 0-4 seat is tricky. Also if baby sleeps when you arrive you have to then uninstall her instead of just lifting the baby seat out.

SB2, Robin and axptguy,
Thanks for your help. We ended up buying an infant car seat that attaches to a stroller - the car seat will only last for the first 9 months (13kg) and the stroller will be good for the first 4 years. In 9 months time, we will buy another car seat. We feel this would be the safer option.

Havefaith, I know you have already bought your carseat, but just wanted to let you know we bought the maxi cosi with the Quinny Frame and it was just fantastic. Now our baby is 8 months old, we have just transferred into the Maxi Cosi Priori and it is sensational. Our baby just loves it.
I haven't minded paying the double costs by buying two lots of carseats because it has been worth it. When you go for the next size up consider the Maxi Cosi as it's also handy as it's reclines 3 points.

Neenib,
Thanks for your recommendation. We will definitely be looking at the Maxi Cosi Priori in a few months time.

We had Maxi Cosi Cabriofix which was fantastic for the first 12 months!

We're currently debating what infant car seat to get, and whether to get a base to go with it. Our car isn't Isofix compatible, so it would have to be a base you can use with a seatbelt - does anyone have experience with these, and is it worth the extra cost over just using the seat on its own?

Yes, we have the maxicosi cabriofix with easybase (seatbelt usage) and it has been fabulous! Very, very safe and sturdy. We liked the easybase because it felt much more secure and didn't move around on the seat at all. We are actually selling ours if you are interested.
We have just moved our baby to the next size up and again purchased the maxicosi, in the Priori 8months - 4 yrs), which still has 4 different recline levels. It's also up nice and high and our baby loves it being able to see out the window. That one actually comes with the base as a set.
We have been so happy with the maxicosi brand.

One of the latest developments in infant car seat technology is the seat base which stays in the car and the seat itself which can be removed. This system is very convenient as you don't have to touch your baby when transferring from car to elsewhere. Your baby can be put in the seat and then carried to and from the car in the infant car seat.

The maxi cosi is a good one but the Britax is the most popular brand which is used by most of the people. The Britax car seats are compatible and and carry a weight of 30 to 40 pounds. These can be easily installed into your car.

Does anyone know where we can get a seat belt extender? We were given a maxi cosi car seat but our seat belts are too short. Our car also isn't compatible with the the isofit system. Has anyone else had this problem? Our car is a Honda CRV. Would appreciate any tips! Thanks
