How much do you give to people in general? Also, I've a relative who's kid is having a b'day party soon and she specified no present just give lai see...but how much is appropriate for a b'day party near CNY for a young primary kid related to you??? help! thanks!

i would think for a niece/nephew, $500 would be appropriate; for security guards, 20-100 depending on the level of personal service they give you (opening doors, carrying parcels for you etc.)

How about for the building management people in your building? We have about 8 -10 different people at our place (5 during day and 5 during night not all at once but they vary). Is $50 per red packet too cheap?

I overheard some locals saying they give $10 to the guards and $20 to the ones who are especially nice.......but I think that might be a bit stingy but then again some of them really aren't nice and are unhelpful when you need it (like watching carry a stroller and not helping you or opening the door etc)!

Same here! Especially with the economic downturn, $20's have turned to $10's, limited 50's and odd 100's. My helper got her bonus at Christmas! $500 after a 2 years successful contract during. $1000 for second successful 2 year and so on!
