Flying with 11 month old

we took our daughter 11 months to Canada (15 hrs to Toronto) at Christmas. It was her first trip, and we were a bit apprehensive as well. We were in Economy, so I can't comment on Bus. Class (that would be a dream for us!).

In the end, she was great! She got lots of sleep, and at Totonto, all the passengers around us (flight was packed) stood up and commented on our 'dream baby'...we were very relieved!

As far as advice, you will get hot water as needed on the plane, but it may come too hot. Have a bottle of cold bottled water to mix for formula....bring some new toys that baby has never seen before, they may keep him occupied more than familiar ones, and pull them out at intervals

We brought a bbair flight vest, but rarely used it as she preferred to crawl around on our laps (and you're advised to hold bb in the burping position at takeoff/landing anyway)

If he cries, I would shoot back any nasty stares you get...everyone was a child once...don't let it get to you

Don't worry about it at all. If you are a man travelling alone with your little one the stewardesses will be falling over themselves to help, particularly in BC.

Only slight problem maybe that the bassinet might be a bit of a tight fit at 11months.

As for other people's stares they will probably mostly be of sympathy and those that aren't - tough!

when we only had one i travelled from hk to canada alone in bc...everyone was very kind and to the people who weren't, i just figured i wouldn't see them again.

i mean really, do they think i wanted my son to cry for those 20 minutes? i mean really.

go and have a great time. the new toys are a good idea and there will be enough gadgets to keep your little one entertained.

It is very hard to predict what will happen. Plan on not getting any sleep yourself, and wolfing down food. If you expect the worst, it can only be better. And who knows, he might sleep the whole way.

"A few people have told me I am 'brave' taking him alone ( my wife is not coming), especially business class as I will be hated by all other passengers if he grisles or cries."

Ignore the bores. They were babies too once upon a time.

at 11 months, your child isn't walking yet (at least not too much right?) you should be fine in Biz class !

Learn this first thing as a parent- IGNORE all nasty looks from strangers, because you have a LONG way to go.... wait until you kid turns 2 ... and onto 3...... I learned to ignore what others think in public LONG time ago.

Good luck, and have good trip !

My son is 10 months old and so far he made 4 long trips. Shortest one was to Singapore. We flew Bus. Class as well. There was no problem at all.

Please give him lots of fluid druing the flight and speciallt before take off and landing. Good luck

You will be fine - especially in bus.class! Like other posters said, make sure you bring fluids and something for him to suck on (bottle or pacifier) during take-off and landing. We've flown several times (bus.class and economy) with our (now) 11 months old and really thought it was much easier than I expected. Flight attendants are usually very willing to help you with the baby as well. (Holding the baby while you go to the toilet, heating up a bottle, etc.) Just stay calm yourself, whatever happens, and don't expect to get much sleep yourself, and you'll see that the flight will be over before you know it.

gosh, you are very brave!! we took our son who was 11 months then to hawaii from HK and it was a total nightmare with 2 poops and 2 throw-ups. We had business class tickets, but then changed to economy as we could not keep an eye on him in business since they are like pods. In economy he can spread out of on us and we can let him play at our feet and walk the aisles.

Yes, definitely bring his favorite small toys, books, finger foods and soothers if he uses them for take-off and landing. Bring enough water for formula on board and 3-4 extra nappies than the usual amt in case he poops. Bring him 2 extra pairs of clothing and an extra shirt for yourself in case of an accident on YOU.

dadda, i'm flying back to sydney next week to visit the family, on CX business class, and at night but with hubby, so i'll let you know how it goes! my boy is 12mths old. i actually forced myself to have two happy meals this week (gross!) to get those toys to flash to him on the flight when in need. i hope he sleeps well and i suppose it's all about keeping them occupied and not bored. a friend recommended getting a hand-held dvd player and playing his fave dvd but i don't think i'll go to that extent. wish me luck!
