Now this is the first time im buying a laptop in hongkong. and since its the reccession and all, i wonder where can i get the best deal.
And please do educate me, what specifications should i be looking for. Its primary use will be typing docs. sometimes watching movies, perhaps even playing games, definitely surfing the internet, and oh for keeping the photos.
Please do suggest a price range. Also i like my laptop white or colorful or with art, the only laptop i saw that are as such is from sony. I need a little inspiration when writing. So do tell :)
Ive heard about this nasty rumors about sales people showing you a gadget for that works then when youve decided to purchase. theyll at the back to get you supposedly a new one. And guess what! when you get home it doesnt work!!

mothercricket, any laptop is sufficient for your use as non of the things you have mentioned will require heavy usage apart from playing games. I have a compaq presario that plays red alert 3 ok with all settings to minimum. If you play something similar then i suggest one that has a graphics card rather than using the onboard display. Do you have a specific brand you prefer and what your budget is?
Rather than buying from computer centres in MK, SSP or wan chai, i suggest you buy from more prominent shops such as fortress, broadway and chung yuen for peace of mind, the price may be around the same. My colleague bought an IBM laptop that was cheaper compared to those computer centres.

If you buy in one of the computer centres, this is unlikely. Some of the stores even give a five year warranty on their own systems.
I'll agree with 0982. If you really want peace of mind, go to Fortress or Broadway.
A cheap option is to go to the Wan Chai Computer Centre and find the second hand laptop stores on the second floor. They give a 90 day warranty (except on the battery) but the prices tend to be very good. You can pick up a one year old laptop for 1/3 of its original cost.

What kind of games? If you're talking 3d, you need more horsepower. If you're talking simple games, not so much. The range is quite big. For photos, Internet and such, you don't need a lot. Screen size, resolution and weight are important considerations.
