Beijing Travel Advice Please

I'm visiting Beijing for a couple of days and need advice on two things:


1) Best area to book a hotel (conveniently located please). I plan to visit the usual places (Forbidden City, Summer Palace etc).


2) I am travelling without my passport (just have a photocopy). I'm currently having one of my visas renewed so its with one of the embassies here in SH... The person I will be with has hers though. Will this be a problem checking into hotels?

i could suggest a hotel in Wang Fu Jing, as its on the train line and also have lots of food places around the area and shopping as well..
