Caffeinated Tea for 3 Year Old?

ORIGINAL POST

Is 3 year old too young to have caffeinated drinks such as green tea and black tea? I heard these drinks help reduce intake of mercury from eating fish and since we do eat a lot of fish at home, I was wondering if it is a good idea for my kids to start having them.

Agreed with Cara. A little is fine. My kids have had sips of coffee and tea since they were one.

As for the mercury in fish, I would strongly suggest limiting the intake of fish high in mercury instead of trying to stop the uptake after the fact.

Hey I also agree with Cara and axptyguy. All my kids have had sips of tea since about the age of one. My 18 month old daughter follows me around when I have a cup of tea knowing that she will get 2 or 3 sips! She loves it and thinks it's so funny.

As for fish you should really limit what your little one eats. Mercury can harm a developing nervous system. In the US they advise eating upto 12oz of low mercury fish a week for adults - roughly 2 meals. Drinking tea will have no real affect on the mercury intake and mercury itself can accumulate in the body.

Thank you all for your comments. I have just downloaded a list of mercury levels in different fish and will start monitoring the intake. Coming from Japan, I grew up eating mostly fish but sadly times are different now and fish aren't that safe anymore....
