thanks Cara.
as Chinese don't say 'thank you' in such circumstances so I feel awkward to say it

If you don't want to say 'thank you', you could just squeeze their hand, smile at them and nod without saying anything or say "She's out of pain now, so I'm trying to think of her" or " I appreciate your thoughts" or "that helps" or "Your kindness is appreciated."
I second filet-o-panda's request for clarification please!

thanks all of you.
usually we say , in chinese "yau sum", means "with heart", "acknowledge your care, concern", it do means "thank you" as well. in English, "thank you" covers wide area of expressing gratitude. but there's different in Chinese.
someone gave us a present. we say "dol tseng"
someone help us to do something, e.g moving a heavy carton from one side to another, we say "ng goi"
both "dol tseng" & "ng goi" are "thank you" in English, but they are not the same in Chinese
