Looking for advise on where to find genuine south east antiqes - mainly Buddhist items, eg from Thailand or Burma. Have a client coming to town that wants me to introduce them to someome and I don't have a clue except to head to Hollywood road which I have a feeling will be a bit too touristy for them.
Thanks for your help!

Thanks but I am looking for more specific leads than that, my client(and our business is nothing related to this query) is very particular that they would like to see a dealer who specislises with "serious" collectors. Having been here a few years ago and browsed Hollywood road their feeling was that mainly the art on offer was for tourists.

There is (or was) a place in Horizon Plaza that sold only Buddha statues from small to life size. All old.
I am talking about back in November and I can't remember which floor othan than it was at the west end of the floor. Sorry can't be more specific than that.
You may have to give Horizon Plaza a visit beforehand to see if it is still there or perhaps someone else can remember seeing it.

If he is a serious collector of Thai/Burmese items then he should take a detour to Bangkok and visit River City, OP Place and other dealers in that neighbourhood. Lots of serious dealers in that area. However, there are possible issues on taking Buddha statues out of Thailand (especially if large and Thai). I imagine dealers are flexible in their export reporting details.

Thanks Dive Bum -yes my client is definitely a serious collector and has been very particular about the kind of things they want to view, my problem is that I don't have a clue about these items. Lets just say they are quite a demanding client and would not appreciate being shown somewhere far beneath their level of expectation, sigh.
Do you have any personal experience with this area / recommendations of shops in particular?
Thanks

I've bought some stuff (eg Alabaster Buddha statue) from a shop close to River City that told me it mainly sells to dealers and institutions (eg hotels). Who knows if that was true - we liked the goods and the price was right. If it turns out they're fakes, we won't be ruined. I'd guess there are rent-an-experts/guides that would specialise in assisting well-heeled shoppers find their antique home furnishings and suggest that this may be worth investigating. Of course, there's always the worry of being scammed but if your client is a serious collector, he should be savvy enough to spot obvious time wasters. My recommendations would not be based on any knowledge/understanding of the market. Do a search on River City and see if it looks plausible. They've got lovely stuff there and way more expensive than we could afford.

Thanks Dive Bum will look into it - client is well heeled, european old money, happy to spend on antiques but drives a very hard bargain on the business we do together!
