I'm not asking about the relative merits. I understand them and am pretty well fine with either.
Manual makes the car cheaper and it uses less fuel. Also, in many cars the automatic gearbox is less than stellar.
My question is, how does manual as opposed to auto affect resale value in HK?

Quite an effect on resale value unless it's something like an Evo or WRX. HK'ers always go the auto route and this is what they will always look for 2nd hand. A friends of mine deals in cars - takes the main dealer px's and sells them to other dealers or customers and he'd never touch a manual unless dirt cheap.
Higher level Euro cars or Japanese (apart from Mitsubishi) have pretty solid auto trans nowadays (and all electronically controlled) so not the problems you used to experience with hunting and lurching as old auto cars.

Thanks for answers very much. Auto it is then. :(
Agreed with evildeeds that higher level cars have very good auto transmission. Those I like. But most auto transmissions have annoyingly slow reaction speeds, especially given all the hills in HK.
BTW Pork Chop. I disagree with your opinion of the clutch. With hills and turns manual (or good auto) is a big advantage. All the hills and turns force constant shifting, and most auto transmissions just can't keep up. I have often found myself in the wrong gear, cursing as the car slows to a crawl in a roundabout or around a bend. As I then floor the accelerator to force kick-down there's a long wait for the right gear. Note that we're talking a car that costs 150k new. In an Audi or whatnot this sort of thing is never a problem.

axptguy - most of the auto preference is down to the small area of HK and the traffic problems in Kowloon, around Central and particularly the Cross Harbour tunnel where wait's of an hour can happen! Hill's are not really an issue as such - back in UK I used to love knocking a BMW 330 down into 3rd at around 70mph and slamming my foot to the floor going up and down the box as I went up and downhill. Sadly not something you can really do in HK! Mind you I did enjoy relaxing in 4WD autos.
Since being in HK all my cars have been autos, the latest actually has a very responsive gearbox and I guess I don't really miss manuals here.

Bottom line for resale is your ability to resell it! In HK manuals are ordered on specific types of cars mostly performance related. This demographic is small, so it your target on selling.
While I hate to admit it, the tiptronic and auto clutch options in high performance cars today are excellent plus ideal for HK driving!
ONLY BUY A MANUAL IF THE CAR IS WORTH MORE SELLING IT THAT WAY!

Thanks for advice.
"I think most auto's these days in medium level cars are great. I live on South Side so deal with hills & curves each day. I drive a Jag & a BVolvo XC90."
I think we have different definitions of "medium level". I agree that those are great. You should try the auto in a Fiat sometimes. Awful.
