Good dentist?

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good, reasonably priced dentist here in HK.

My husband has just been quoted in excess of $15,000 for a crown. It would actually work out cheaper for him to fly to the UK and get the work done by our old dentist! Our medical insurance does not cover this amount, the dentist just seems to want to make a fast buck; I guess many insurance policies would cover the cost...

Ideally on HK Island, but happy to travel to Kowloon or NT.

Thanks.

I've had dental work done here http://www.bumrungrad.com/

Very professional - all medical staff are trained overseas - mostly in the US.

Great prices

Try Bayley & Jackson and ask if you can get the corporate discount.

Thanks. Not sure who he went to yesterday, but know I would like to earn as much as that dentist does!

Recently had a crown fitted - did not require root canal work, and the all in prices my dentist offered were $3600 for an amalgam filling, $6100 for titaniam filling, $8200 for gold filling. Price included x-rays etc no extras on top. Dentist: Terry K N Law - he has 2 offices Central Tel 2877 8103 and North Point 2508 0300.... I don't know which insurance companies his practise works with as ours only covers doctors not dentists...

You could try Judith Diestel or May May San and ask for a quote. They are in Queens Road, Central.

It worked out better for me to fly back to the US and get my dental worked fixed that was botched by an "american trained" dentist here in HK--who even has the name "American" in the practice name. Always get a second opinion BEFORE they start on you, or you may get an un-necessary root canal and supposedly "urgently needed" treatment for something that only serves to enrich the dentist-when all you needed was to glue a crown back on. In excess of HKD 15,000 poorer but enriched by the experience and wisdom....Really, what amounts to FRAUD on a massive scale on an unsuspecting patient.

Sorry for your experience sweethome. It is true that there exists a pretty wide gap in competencies in the dental professionals here. Yet, it is a fact that US trained/educated dentists possess more education than dentists from other countries. "US trained" does not necessarily mean "US educated" and herein lies the challenge. It is prudent to ask the dentist where they attended Dental School. US educated dentists have to go through 4 years of undergrad education before being admitted to Dental School, which in most cases is another 4 years. Then, if they are specialists (orthodonists, periodontists, oral surgeons, etc) they have specialist training after that. If they say "American trained" I would ask exactly what that training was. This is the patient's right to know.

There are a handful of excellent US educated and trained dentists here (some Asians and some Westerners) with strong work ethics and morals.

You would be best off travelling to get decent dentistry done. And unless you know that you need that crown done, you may also want to get a second opinion. A dentist ruined my teeth after going in for a filling and charging me a fee that would put Somali pirates to shame. He then wanted to charge another fortune to crown the tooth. I felt like I had been to the proctologist rather than the dentist. The webmaster of AsiaExpat continually blocks me from posting his name on this site to warn other of this Creighton sheister.
