Just a quirk of HK or am I missing somthing? but it seems that banks have a strong dislike of each other. You can't use any other local bank ATM card at HSBC or Hang Seng, other than thier own? One way to have a monopoly I guess, but very
inconvenient for consumers. That and the fact that ATMS seem pretty thin on the ground for a place that loves to deal in cash! I love HK as much as the next person but as an expat here the banking system seems pretty odd and Ive lived all over Asia!

The non HSBC Group cards are all part of the JETCO system and you can go to any ATM machine outside of the HSBC Group to use these. It gives you quite a number of alternatives though I agree that in certain geographical areas, eg. Southside, the JETCO representation is pretty sparse.
Hope this helps. The Community Advice Bureau (CAB)

Jetco as mentioned is much more convenient than an HSBC or Hang Seng ATM card as they are pretty much everywhere in HK which also means queue's are much less. Not sure about southside, but on north side, in Kowloon and NT it's much more convenient to be using Jetco.

HSBC and Hang Seng are also pretty much littering the place. ;)

There are Hang Seng AND JetCo network machines (mosty BOC but now some BEA as well) in every MTR station as well, so if you use the train you'll always have access to either...plus you can get cash back from Circle K among others if you use EPS to purchase anything....
