How does one go about buying a satellite phone and setting up an account here in Hong Kong?

I use Inmarsat in VietNam (unofficially) and the coverage is solid. Be careful if taking your unit to China, wear it rather than carry in checked baggage. The antenna is the giveaway - if you get a model which has a removable antenna you will encounter fewer hassles.

Thanks for that I will be using my phone on the ocean so not problems with customs etc. How about the service provider? do you just stick in your own SIM card?

These are SATELLITE phones - totally different to land-based cell phones.


Contact Imarsat - they have a wide choice of terminals.


Remember, digital comms (aka SMS/text) is cheaper than verbal chat.
