wii - no idea!

I don't know much about wii, but my slightly techo hubbie really wants one. So I thought I'd get him one for his birthday. But I have a few questions after reading some of the posts here....

Why would you buy a "modded" US wii when you can buy a real US wii?

Does it matter which "region" we buy - we're moving to Europe in a few months, but are originally from Aus?

Will we have problems buying games in other countries or are they all downloadable from the internet?

Where is the best place to buy it from?

Do we need anything else for it to work?

On another topic, if we buy a Blu-ray player, can it be set to play all regions given we're moving around the world?

Cheers.

Hi, I'm not a video game lover, but I'm a mom and a friend told ME to get the Wii Fit. It's absolutely fabulous for women to get in shape. Anyway, you may turn out to love it more than your hubby! Here's what I would advise: Go to 188 Wan Chai or to the Wan Chai computer Centre and go upstairs. Get a US version real Wii so it won't break on you. All Wiis are US version, Japanese version or Korean version. If you aren't ever going to use the Wii Fit, you could get the Korean version, but the Japanese version won't give you directions in English, so it's no use. I'd buy the real version for $2300-$2700 at either of the locations I've suggested. They'll tell you it will need a remote, possibly a numchuck and the plugs, instructions will come with it. If hubby wants to do car racing or Wii sports, he might want to buy more pieces which go around the remote to make it into something else like a baseball bat, a steering wheel, etc. They're very cool.

"Get a US version real Wii so it won't break on you"

Why would the other versions break?

Plug adapter if you get a US one.

Not sure, but definitely ask the salesman.

"Why would you buy a "modded" US wii when you can buy a real US wii?"

Various reasons, mostly do do with playing pirated games. I'm not an expert onthe Wii so don't quote me on that.

To start downloading is illegal. If you're ok with that, you can play downloaded games.

Thank you both for your replies.

Notyou - do you mean 188 Wan Chai Rd?

Axptguy38...can't you legally buy games online to download? That's what I was referring to, but I have no idea - just assumed you could buy and download stuff over the internet. (I'm not techy enough to know how to do the illegal stuff.)

It's 188 Wanchai Road.

We got a legal US model and it came with an adapter already fitted.

The games and hardware seem a lot cheaper at 188 then, say, at Pacific Place.

The Wii Fit is, indeed, great fun but not as much as shooting zombies!

We struggle with the online stuff. I've managed to race my brother on the Mario Kart game - he lives several thousand miles away and that worked a treat. But, I've not managed to get on to the Wii site, where you can download (legal) games. That may be a HK thing as I'm not sure HK is an official Wii location (on initial set up, you can't set your home location as HK, for instance).

As to the BluRay, I'd be pretty sure that Sony players won't be multi-region and more generally that BluRays are not multi-region. I've not seen 'No-region' knock off discs in Bangkok, so I assume these don't exist either.

In some cases, like many PC games, yes. As for the Wii, I must admit I'm not sure.

Sony players are notorious for being hard or impossible to unlock. I would suggest going for another brand.

Modded wii allows you to play pirated games. But you need to consider this-some games you buy have inside them a certain 'system update' which probably either won't play or block you wii to play more pirated games. US wii play ONLY US games and same for Japanese, Korean and Eurpoean wii's. A US wii is around HK$2,200 and you get the sport game and one remote and one nun-chuck with an American silicon protector (it is much better than the usuall ones they sell).

You can buy 'wii points' which allows you to download games to the console when it is connected to the web (If you have a modded wii I would suggets NOT to connect to the web because it would be detected as modded and so on).
