Hi,
I have been in HK for two years now and separated from my husband pretty much the second day upon arriving. Prior to this I found out my husband was a gambler online and we had to sell our house, furniture anything to pay off debt... We thought we could erase this dark period by coming to HK and starting fresh but it didn't happen. I want to divorce now so badly just to be able to move on and to secure my finances. He is as happy as ever dating, spending... whereas I am extremely sad and lonely and have the responsibility of our children. I can't take it anymore, I do not want to be liable for his mistakes particularly as we have 2 small children who live with me. Luckily I found a job in education which doesn't pay much but offers me stability and takes my mind off the sadness I feel. With some persuasion from my part I have finally got him to agree to divorce me. Furthermore we have come to an agreement and both believe it is in ours and the children's best interest to settle this amicably without too much expense. However the divorce attorneys/ mediators I have contacted all charged $4000/hour which neither one of us can afford.
How to find someone affordable that will free me once and for all from this grief? Thanks for your kind help.

After experiencing a horrible costly and lengthily divorce in Hong Kong, I started to explore the divorce system in Hong Kong and I found out that there is no information that s available to the layperson when facing or even considering divorce.
The problem is that for most people who are getting divorced, it is their first and hopefully, only experience of this kind, and this lack of experience in addition to lack of information, makes them naive and under-informed about what the divorce process is really all about especially. Of course most people seek a legal advice and that is when the information come comes from - from lawyers.
Litigation and other legal actions, from my point of view, are the worst places to deal with it. ‘Win Win’ situation in court, according to 90% of the cases I know, means only one thing – win for both lawyers that represent the parties.
People feel confident because they know they are represented by a lawyer and because they believe they are ‘right’. Then again, the other side will also be confident from the same reasons.
Knowledge is power, information make it clearer in a circumstances that even the terminology is new and a law-glossary is needed.
My 'expensive' experience is valuable and it is rare that someone is willing to share, especially the mistakes. (Which become mistakes only after you finish the process and then you realize that you had other way to do it – even throughout litigation). I can share with you what the law can do and can not do for you - information that you can not / will not get in another way.
A divorce coach can giude you thru the process saving yo ua lot of money, time and pain. Get the information first - I truly believe that getting all the information available before taking the next step and understanding the options you have – can make the difference.

Thank you for responding to my message and for your useful advice having been through what seems a horrible experience. When you say get the information first - am I correct in saying you mean gather paperwork (bank accounts information, pension plan, mortgage information, children's schedule etc...)? Then would you be able to recommend a divorce coach?

Well - please send me a PM ( I will send you the details also) and we will be able to contact.

If the ground for divorce and all ancillary reliefs including custody of children and property distribution are agreeable by the parties, it can save money and time to a certain extent. Perhaps we can have an initial conference of consultation. We charge HK$2,800 for this.
