Keeping barbecues clean

ORIGINAL POST
Posted by dizzyhytes 17 yrs ago
The barbies have started and I had my first one last night, leaving hours of cleaning to get the burnt grease off the grill and pan. Any advice to a barbe newbie to keep the stuff clean, other than lining everything with foil...

Also any good barbecue cleaning stuff to recommend?

Thanks!

Don't clean it.

Knock off the sticky bits and the spray liberally with cannola oil cover and leave it til next time the oil stops the grille and flat plate from rusting. Next time spray again liberally with canolla oil heat the grille and flat plate up and then scrape with scrapers that fit your grille. Use some old newspapers to soak up the excess oil then you are ready to go again. That keeps the BBQ flavour in the grille catchment rocks

"Don't clean it. "

Indeed. Just use a BBQ brush and scraper every now and then. The grease can be left on.

I'll do a deep clean every few months, once the gas nozzles start to gunk up.

I have lava rocks below the grille to keep the grease dripping from the gas nozzels. They soak up the grease and give a great BBQ flavour. I've had my 6 burner Jackeroo for 9 years now and have never cleaned it just oiled and scrapped. My range lives in the garden in the rain with a cover and has still not shown any signs of rust that I should be concerned about.

I've heard some people say a cover is good, and others that say it traps the moisture under it and actually makes rust more likely. No idea myself, but I think that a good grill won't rust out quickly simply because it is made of better materials.

don't put foil under the burner..the heat reflected up will prematurely burn out aluminum burners

spray the grills with cooking oil before you light the bbq...things should wipe clean and then respray until next use

Hi everyone, that's great thanks a lot. I don't mind not cleaning the bottom bit and just scaping it, but I think I would like to clean the grill (sorry, am a stickler for cleaning...)

Crystal, where can I get the barbecue spray you are talking about in HK? Do you know the brand?

190k, do you know where I can get the lava rocks - that sounds great.

Thanks!

I brought the lava rocks up from Oz with the range. Others have posted where to get them here but a word of warning. The first time you use the rocks really heat them up a hot as you can with the lid on for 1/2 hour before you start cooking. The reason is that some of the rocks will natrually have gas trapped in them so if you just start to BBQ and a rock explodes your food will be a mess and someone could get hurt.
