Housing Allowance for UK expat

ORIGINAL POST

I have been offered a job in HK by my company in the UK and will soon be negotiating the terms. I have been told I will get my normal GBP salary and a housing allowance but I don't know what that will be yet.

I have looked at housing costs in HK and see that they vary alot so I would like to know what other UK expats get. I am late 30s in mid management role.

if you are single, then 30K HKD should get you a nice pad on HK Island. Ask for that.

If you get that, you can choose to live elsewhere for, say, 20K - and 10K/month can pay for restaurants etc. That means you keep your entire GBP salary.

if you have kids you will need a lot more than hkd 30. have a look at rental ads.

leases in hk tend to be for 14 months + 2 months break. i.e. 16 months (unlike uk where 12 months and can break at 6 months). in this market i would be getting my company to sign the lease, then you're not stuck with a liability should the worst happen.

20-30k gets you 1000-1200sqft in Mid-levels

30-40k gets you 1500sqft

I would suggest a minimum of 30k. Living conditions & space is alot different here so you need to make sure you get a decent pad.
