Hi, My 22 mth old is refusing to take her milk. She still drinks her milk in a bottle and was very happy to drink that 3 times a day and it was her favourite thing, infact she would have gladly had her milk instead of her meal had I allowed it. And now all of a sudden she doesnt want to put the bottle in her mouth. In the morg I offered her with the straw, and after the first sip she didnt want any more. Shes always been 15% percentile on the growth chart so her liking for milk was a great source of comfort for me as i could give her fruit milkshakes in the bottle.

Her refusal is freaking me out. What shall I do. Is she teething and maybe its hurting to suck....dont know...would love to hear what u think...

thanks

It might be a psychological issue ("I don't want") or maybe something about the taste right now.

My suggestion is to ease up on the milk for a few days, then try again. Nutrition is more of an "average over many days" thing so no worries there. If you keep insisting she will probably just become more obstinate. Taking a break, then reintroducing is easier. If she still refuses, call your pediatrician's nurse and ask what she thinks.

You can also try another brand, or even soymilk.

yes, my 4-year-old is the same. He liked to have bread as breakfast 3 months ago. Suddenly, he said he wanted to have chinese congee as breakfast. You know, it's difficult to cook chinese congee every morning. I don't know why. I asked my doctor. He said it's normal for children suddenly changed their habits. They might want to challenge my authority or just naughty. So, don't worry. Maybe you can add milk into corn flakes or biscuits. she might like it.

My daughter did exactly the same - I would leave it and dont pressurise her at all. Offer and if she says no say fine - she will probably come back to it, but in the meantime make sure she gets some cheese and yogurts and make meals with milk in it like macaroni cheese etc.......it's a 'picky' phase and very common. The more you make of it the more they will refuse. Daughter now drinks milk again and even takes it with her weetabix in the morning now ........I think its an early way of 'control' for them. That's my tuppence worth

my son gave up milk from bottle when he was like 1.5 months old and since then he only has one cup of milk, the most in a day and most of the time i have to add in some fruits or cereal to go with it. He is now 2, I really don't bother whether he drinks or not as long as he eats a 3 well balance meals and some snacks in between. He went back to the health centre to check on his physical development last month, i told the nurse he is not drinking much milk but he is happy, progress well in every aspect and active. Nurse told that when a child turn one, his or her main diet is not milk but solid food and now at two, he can go off milk if he does not want to drink. If i do offer, i offer him skim milk & I do offer cheese and yogurts every other day.
