My son is almost 2.5 and he is currently studying in Woodland Montessori. He just got promoted to a the Stepping Stone class in which he has to attend class on his own and not accompanied by adults. It's his 4th class today. His first class was ok, he didn't cry or anyhing. But there onwards he cried every time and this morning he even refused to go into the classroom. I was told by other parents in the next class that he sat alone in the playground during playtime. It's so not like him. He used to be the most energetic and talkative kid in his playgroup class. His teacher wrote in his handbook that we have to convince him that he is a big boy now and do things independently. I honestly think he is quite independent so far, not too clingy to anyone, and he has been potty-trained long ago. Can anyone give me any advice what can be done at home to get him more prepared? I know this is only the 4th class for him but shall I be concerned?
Any advice appreciated!

4th class? Don't worry about it. Some of the kids cry the first three weeks. Typically they are ok once they are past the "saying goodbye" stage of the school experience. That is, 10 minutes later they're playing and happy.
My girl was fine the first week, then cried the second week, then was so-so the third week. After that it was no looking back.
I wouldn't talk too much with him about it. Just firmly explain he has to go to school if he asks.
Also, make the good-bye quick. No lingering. If he sees you hesitate, he will cry.

Thanks axptguy and cara. That's reassuring. I think maybe we talked too much about being a big boy and attending class alone. Every time we remind him about school, he will say 'no need to cry'. I wonder what kind of association is in his mind?? School = no crying?? I guess we all have to leave him alone.
Cara your method sounds good haha! Last time during his kindy interview, I promised to let him have ice-cream if he answered teacher's questions. And he did it so well! Guess bribery once in a while makes no harm. I just hope he doesn't come to me for a milkshake after school every time!
