How do you know if a taxi has changed it's meter? The taxi can claim it hasn't and charge you the extra.

I'm sure I always getting screwed :(

Check the price when you get in, if it's $16, it's the old meter; if $18 it's been updated.

For red taxis:

1. New flag fall is $18 as opposed to the old $16 - check when you get in.

2. New increment is $1.5. As a result, total fare will always be a full dollar or $x.50 under the fare schedule - if it is not, you know the meter is still set to the old schedule and adjustment (surcharge for short trips, reduction for longer ones) should be applied.

I find most red cabs still show a $16 start figure and for nearly all short trips they've not bothered to consult the fare table and ask for a higher amount. I think the break even point is around $40. My last trip back from the airport also started at $16 and ended up at around $340 - this is what the driver asked for and was more than a bit miffed when I required him to look up the correct fare on the tables - $284. I imagine most tourists would have forked out the $340.

I think all taxis should be required to fix their meters within 1 month of the change, not wait till their next service appointment. As for airport taxis you're better off not using the taxis in the queue. There are other ways to get back to the city (and I am not referring to Airport Xpress or A buses).
