We are wanting to buy a cheap used car for less than $10K. An older japanese model and we dont have much money to spend on purchasing it.

Apart from the cars listed on this site, can anyone point me in the right direction of where to look?

Much appreciated.

Under 10k? Wow. Might be tough. Under 20k might be more realistic unless you want to buy a real clunker that just costs money in repairs.

Vin's Motors is really the place to go. 1 year warranty on labor. 30 days parts and labor. And from experience, they really mean it. I came back after a few days with 6-7 minor issues and they fixed them no questions asked, on a ten year old car.

They are very easy to deal with and have a big inventory. I know I sound like an ad but they really are excellent. Several friends have bought from them, as well as ourselves.

Go over there. Allot 2-3 hours. You'll be able to drive any car you want around their garage, and for a longer test if you want. If they don't have anything in your budget you can always ask. They might be able to point you in the right direction.

BTW the "budget" criterion does not work on the site.

For under 10K you will probably need to trawl through the local classifieds ads.

It's possible - I know a few guys who have bought cars for that money - 1 bought a Honda CRV and the other a Honda Civic, both of mid 90's heritage. Another guy got a Toyota Windom and one managed a Lexus LS400. Sometimes you'll find the odd bargain with a sign in the window.

Vins as mentioned above are ok - although in pricing terms they can be expensive compared to others for the English experience! Kowloon Bay HITEC centre is great for comparing hundreds of dealers and the car supermarket located in the old abattoir in Cheung Sha Wan holds the odd part exchange bargains - a few cars there for less than 10K.

Quite true. But you do get a bit more than the car. For example the guarantee period and the no-questions-asked service. Also, they guarantee to re-purchase your car when you move away or want to trade in.

Keep your eyes peeled on the Asiaxpat used cars for sale section of the classifieds, you get the odd bargain in there from time to time.

There was 1994 BMW 5speed auto 520i, that had service history, and previously expat owned, for $10,000hkd inc 6 months worth of road tax/registration, which alone is worth close enough to $3,000. Would have been worth a look, as it sounded quiet good-honest and if my 90 535i that traveled 260,000kms without incident back home, is anything to go by these cars are generally pretty good, if they are cared for by the previous owner.

Anyway, for $10,000 that would have done the job pretty well, I think.
