Vancouver to Seattle travel tips

Hi,

We're taking a summer cruise around Alaska that departs from Seattle. We got a good deal on the airticket from Hong Kong to Vancouver and now need to get to Seattle. People have told me that taking the road option will be more scenic, economical and should be fairly short i.e. like 2.5 hours or so. Does anyone have any experience ? Can I take a bus to get to Seattle or perhaps rent a cab ? We're a family of three and want a comfortable yet economical way of getting to Seattle.

Appreciate feedback and thanks in advance

Cheers

Just rent a car and drive down the I-5 highway to Seattle. I would not recommend the bus at all - the border guards are really unpleasant, insist that everyone get off the bus at the border and you're treated like cattle for as long as they take to question everyone on the bus. If you drive down you can stop wherever you like and the border crossing is not bad at all. I've done that trip dozens of times.

Hi Deliran,

thanks for the tip, I will have to get a driving license for that ( my old one from back home expired and never bothered to get one in HK). Would renting a cab be too expensive ?

I've never heard of renting a cab to go over the border - it is about a 3hr trip so it could be quite expensive and I'm not sure of the reaction you'd get from the border guards. If you don't have a driver's license, it's not hard to get one in Hong Kong if you can show them your old one, fill out some paperwork and pay a fee.

Another option is to take the train - you would leave from downtown Vancouver, at the main train/bus station (this would be where you would take a bus from as well). It's a fairly nice trip. You might want to look up 'BC rail' or 'Via rail' on google to check if it's still running and get to a sense of the schedule and price.

Actually I just checked the train myself out of curiosity and it turns out it's Amtrak who are running the train traffice between Vancouver and Seattle. Here's the link:

It looks like it might be about $46 US per adult one way.

You would find a taxi from Vancouver, BC to Seattle QUITE expensive. And you just might find the "ahem" friendly folks at US customs quite interested why you would take a taxi! Then of course the taxi meter would be running as you smiled and tried to be pleasant with those folks!

Good luck!

At Vancouver Airport, you can find Limosuine service down to Seattle. It costed me USD300 four year ago.
