We live in a nice flat but the building is quite old. The bathroom does not smell nice no matter how much we tried to scrub it. Could the problem relates to the tiles, the toilet or to the pipes?
Are there some chemicals on the market that we can buy to take away/blow away the staleness?

If the previous tenants keep pets, it's possible that their pee had gone underneath the tiles or floorings. How to get rid? Not possible. Unless you change the tiles.

Actually I intend to ask the same question.

second the advice on the floor drain...if the floor is not washed frequesntly (and I mean mopped and rinsed with water) the p-trap in the floor drain (the one near the base of the wall with the grate on it) will dry out, letting sewer gases back into the room...por some water into the drain if nothing else every few months so that this doesn't happen
a clear explanation is here:

Anyone care to comment on 'the beans'?
Hi there jj!
Please support our advertisers:
1. wash the place with bleach and water.
2. wash down with water again
3. if the drains are not clean, use a drain cleaner with hot water. repeat if necessary
4. use an dehumidifier for several hours, several times. this will dry the place fully, dealing with any mould that the bleach did not deal with.
5. if these fail, then rent a good quality ioniser (the small cheap ones are unlikely to work well enough).
Remember that your landlord owns the place and it is their responsibility. Get them to fix it.
If all else fails, move out.

re beans>
obviously you've never heard that classic of children's poetry:
Beans, beans, they're good for your heart,
The more you eat, the more you fart,
The more you fart, the better you feel,
So eat your beans at every meal!
What JJ is saying is maybe the odor is coming from within...I think he was kidding tho ;-)

Thanks for the explanation. My hubby told me about the farting part but no mentioning of the poem.

Or as Bart Simpson would have it:
"Beans, beans the musical fruit -
The more you eat, the more you toot.
Sorry. Just had to get that out.......
