Hey, great idea. HK should consider this too it would be a big boost to the economy also.

So you want to allow people who were criminals and breaking the law to begin with, mechanise manufacture package and then sell their goods in shops, sending a conflicting message to kids that some drugs are good and some drugs are bad.
Inevitably one will respond with, well what about alcohol, and the most obvious answer is I am guessing the conversion ratio from kids drinking into doing hard drugs is probably far lower than pot.
It's a bad idea, the revenues are negligible as an industry, and I'm not sure what purpose it would serve.

Playing devil's advocate here: alcohol abuse is more damaging to society than marijuna abuse. Alcohol is the harddrug, and marijuna is the softdrug.

"Marijuana is the largest cash crop in California. Just taxing that will bring in billions."
Show me the data?
it has nothing to do with the miniscule tax revenues it would actually bring in, but the message society sends to kids
Yeah its fine to hit the bong and get stoned, but not fine to hit the foil.
Right I see the logic of decriminalising it.

"Marijuana is Americas #1 cash crop at $36 billion a year"
and if you legalize marijuana this means industrial hemp is legalized, and you can look into renewable energy sources with hemp as you can make a hemp based ethanol fuel out of it.
Alchohol is toxic, bad for almost every organ in your body, kills brain cells, inhibits brain cell growth and much more. Marijuana is a substance that is not toxic, encourages brain cell growth, doesnt kill brain cells and is legal in 14 states in america due to its medicinal benefits.
And think about it alchohol is such a social problem; its used to rape, makes you aggresive, makes you vomit, makes people fight etc.
Marijuana; Hungry, happy and sleepy.
Take a look at the statistics - http://drugwarfacts.org/cms/?q=node/30
It is also physically impossible to overdose on marijuana, this is much a problem for alchohol as many die from overdose.
This is what the DEA says "Nearly all medicines have toxic, potentially lethal
effects. But marijuana is not such a substance. There is no record in
the extensive medical literature describing a proven, documented
cannabis-induced fatality."
hmmm marijuana is one of the safest substances known to man in its purest form......
"Marijuana, in its natural form, is one of the safest
therapeutically active substances known to man. By any measure of rational analysis
marijuana can be safely used within a supervised routine of medical care"

Digital Blonde,
You are right. You are doing a lot of guessing when you say the "conversion ratio" from pot to harder drugs is higher than it is for alcohol. I challenge anyone to produce a link to even one peer-reviewed study which gives creedence to the hackneyed "gateway" argument for continued criminalization of marijuana. Furthermore, "the conversion ratio" statement assumes that alcohol is not a hard drug when, in fact, people frequently die from alcohol poisoning, chirossis of liver, and complications associated with alcoholism. Moreover, drunk drivers kill and maim thousands of people every year. There is no rational basis whatever for criminalizing marijuana and not alcohol.

I think pot should be legalized, but not chemical drugs.
