Heavy stepping sound from the upper flat

ORIGINAL POST

A few months ago, there was a couple new neighbours moving-in to my upper flat. It started to my painful life. The sound they made when stepping on the floor is really very noisy. It seems non-stop running in the house. Even early in the morning time and at the mid-night time. The sound seems the one is in a hurry running and very heavy steps running through the house everywhere. The sound makes me can't concentrate on doing work or sleep in the house. My head always painful. The mangement office and I have nicely talked to them to reflect my suffers. Unfortunately, it seems not improvement at all. Since they are doing in their private place, I can't do anything to stop them.

I beg anyone can give me good advice. Because of financial reason, I can't move out to get rid of them. What should I do? Thank you very much for your help!

Wear noise reduction headphones during waking hours and earplugs when you sleep.

Thanks, woods99

It is hard to believe how heavy the steps are! It is a great help even I wear noise reduction headphones. It just likes an elephants walking but walking very fast and very high frequency in a day.

Thanks, iKnow

But it is very hard to catch when they will make the sound. For example, I was being woke up their their noise on last Saturday at around 2:00a.m. and the stepping noise last for about 20 mins. and then last night at about 3:00a.m. it was last for near to half hour. I really made up my mind and woke up to change my clothes and prepared to ask the management office guide come to listen and called for their house. But before taking my action, it stopped again. It is annoyance. Two difficult points: it is hard for the timing to catch them; it is also hard to always well-prepared (changes clothes) go down to make the complaint. I'm going to crazy!

Thanks, iKnow,

I agree the management not helping much! They speak Mandardin and seems come from China. The management said they are always long face and seldom greeting with people. It sounds terrible! I have already suffered almost half year. I should not keep silent. Thanks for your comfort me. I should be brave. I will keep the telephone number.

Welcome to my world! We have exactly the same problem, with Mahjong added in every Saturday night that begins at 11pm and finishes around 2am! Not to mention the constant scraping of furniture across the floor EVERY NIGHT! The clickety clack of that woman's shoes were enough for me to scream and tear my hair out!

I went up there a couple of times as did my husband to speak directly to them, to no avail. In the end the man yelled at my husband saying he is doing nothing wrong.

I wrote a letter begging them to at least have the woman wear slippers or something rubber soled to ease the noise. This woman clacks in her bloody shoes all night long!!! What the hell does she do? Clearly she doesn't sleep! Luckily for us, they heeded our request and I only sometimes here her in her heels during the day.

But we still hear everything else during the night. The best advice to give you is if you have an air con unit in your room, put it onto at least fan to drown out the noise. Soon you will get used to the noise of the fan and find it a nice "white noise".

Mind you, now I don't bother being polite, I get the broom out and bang on the ceiling until they stop and even go out onto the balcony and yell like a banshee as well. But we have our own back in a way, we have major surround sound system now and have bought Wii Rockband. Payback is great! Totally immature, but very satisfying.

Similar situation happened to me during colleage where my roomates and I were constantly having sound "wars" with upstairs...as I matured, I learned to deal with it in a different way. Three years ago, the upstairs neigbor were constantly moving furnitures, walking/running around to what appears to be heels and were driving me crazy. What my father and I did was took a different route, carried a fruit basket upstairs and talked to them in the nicest way possible...never had any problems since. But then again, these were the same neighbors we had for 20 odd years and my father pratically saw them grew up..so in a way they felt a bit guilty.

Hi, Neenib,

Yes, exactly the same case as me, the couple yelled at me and seems they have not done anything wrong. Since I am alone and I am very afraid to fighting with people. Most of the time, I need to study at night time after office until mid-night. So, their noise is very disturbance. I need quiet environment. So, I can't use the music or surround sound system to get rid of the noise. Sometime, I have the same thing as you. I want to use something to knock the ceiling to give them the signal how noisy they are. But, I am very afraid they would be more angry and make more noise. I believe the stepping noise is coming from one person only and the one does not wear shoes or slippers. The size of the couple is not grant but I can't imagine why it is so so heavy. Same as me,, I really want to go up to suggest them wearing the slippers to ease the noise. But..... I'm afraid their face.

Hi, Carmine,

Thank you for your suggestion. You are very lucky. I hope this way can also work in dealing with my upper neighbors. I really don't want to go up to see their long face again. I have the feeling that I like a little child standing in front of the giants.

Are you Chinese yourself? If so, perhaps you could write a letter and put it in their letterbox explaining that you need to study. If you are not Chinese, then perhaps someone can write the letter for you.

If they continue to ignore you, then you may need to get tougher and put a note on their door telling them that must must cease to make so much noise or you will contact the police. As much as you don't want to go down that route, sometimes a good scare tactic is the way.

If you are studying, maybe you can put on some background music, calming music, at least it will take the edge off the noise.

I have the same problem, also tried to speak to them nicely and got screamed at. My friends later told me it's not polite to speak to neighbours you don't know. Who wears high heels and does laps through the house at night?! They are nuts. Neenib, installing a sound system has helped me as well. I wear earplugs practically whenever I am home as well. I guess that's the downside of city life. If I move the next place will have something similar wrong! Incidentally, I spoke to my downstairs neighbours to ask if I am annoying them and thankfully they don't seem to mind me too much.

Good luck everyone!

Thankful for all of your suggestions! I'm very depressed and I don't want to do anything for a few days.

Sweetie, sometimes people are just "heavy on their feet", and make a lot of noise when they walk. If they wear slippers, it won't make any difference. Unfortunately I don't think there is anything you can do. You can't report them to the police for walking heavily. This is a big downside of life in Hong Kong and, in my experience, if you have neighbours like this you just have to accept it. Or move.
