Buying a new car

I'm thinking of buying a new car from a dealership, nothing fancy, just a Toyota Yaris, Mazda 2 or Honda Jazz. Is there room for negotiation here? If so, what % lower than the price tag can I expect to pay? Thanks for your advice!

in Hong Kong, it's one local company having the sole distribution for a particular vehicle manufacturer and they more or less have the market covered in the sense that they can effectively name their own price leaving next to nothing for negotiation. rather than discounts on the retail price, the 'sweetners' to expect is probably better deals on insurance, extra set of carpets, free tank of petrol, one or two optional extras (if you're lucky) or other accessories. however, dealers do sometimes hold 'car shows' at certain shopping malls and offer lower prices on certain models during that particular promotion such as BMW Mini have held promotions at Ocean Terminal in TST in the past. you should take into account there are often good deals to be had on outgoing models where the distributor wants to clear stock of an older model or one that is to be replaced.

alternatively, you can buy an imported car from one of many local car companies. these vehicles are generally lower in price compared to the same vehicle model offered from the official dealership but doing so you'll miss out on the dealership warranty amongst other essential things.

anyway who knows what's out there to be had in this current financial climate ...just my 20¢
