Brazilian Keratin Hair Treatment

ORIGINAL POST

Hi,

I am thinking of having a Brazilian Keratin Hair Treatment done. It's a bit expensive so I am hoping you can help me out. Has anyone had this hair treatment done? Are you happy with the results? How long did it last? Would you consider having it done again? Cheers

Hi,

I've had it done a few times and am pleased with the results. As long as you are not expecting it to perfectly straighten your hair it is a great treatment.

It will condition your hair and relax the curls. My hair was fairly straight for the first few weeks but of course the more you wash your hair the less straight it becomes.

Mostly I appreciated the treatment as it makes it easier to blow dry straight, don't expect to wash and go with straight hair.

I have medium length curly hair which would take me anywhere from 20-30 mins to straighten with blowdrying and using the straight iron. After the treatment I could blowdry with a brush or my fingers and my hair would be straight but still have body at the roots.

A big plus is that it tames the frizzies....

Go ahead and try it, if nothing else you get a great conditioning treatment, with no frizzies.

I am not completely sure, but I think the Hairdressers in Stanley Street, Central might offer it.

Give them a ring first.

Talas in Sai Kung and also the Midlevels also do it. The owner is great. She'll tell you all about it and give you the details if you give her a call or pop in and see her. Her name is Moj.

I´ve read in an US magazine, that the Brazilian Keratin Treatment THERE can be done in ONE day! So no annoying waiting time with the stuff on Your head for 3 days!

Is there a salon in HK who offers the ONE-Day treatment?????

I´ve had the 3-day no washing procedure done at The Hairdressers and absolutely loved the result! Its quite pricey and the downside for me was definately the hiding at home time for 3 days with the sticky, greasy looking lotion on my head...

I had the 3-day no wash procedure at TH2 and agree with the 'hiding' time being horrible, on top of it the lotion smelled so horrible that I woke up during the night because of it.

I've done some research since and bought the product for the ONE-day treatment - took it to my local stylist and got it done on Monday. I washed my hair the next day and it looks and feels fantastic.

D-man: I DID pay HK$ 3.500 when I got it done a few months back at TH2!! When I called Paul Gerrard I was quoted HK$ 1.900!

Hi lace,

thank you for your post. Are you sure that was Brazilian keratin treatment that you paid 3500 for? I am asking because today I was quoted 3500 for a perm, and 1800 for the Brazilian treatment (semi-perm). But in any case, thank you for your post.

What product did you buy for the one-day treatment? I may end up buying it and going to a local stylist too. Seems like it can save me both money and time...

I am very sure about that - I paid HK$ 3.500 for the Brazilian Keratin Treatment at TH@. For the last few years I had my hair straightened there, that was usually around HK$ 2000. I was quite surprised by the huge price difference. I was quoted HK$ 1.900 from Paul Gerrard for the Brazilian though.

The product I bought for the one-day treatment is the Encanto Brazilian Keratin Treatment.

Hi lace,

thank you! I guess I will give it a try at THD, it costs a fortune though... i asked at several other salons in Central and they didn't have this kind of treatment. guess i'll have to buy the product myself and go to a local stylist to get it done, as you do. where did you get that one-day treatment? can i buy it in hong kong?

thank you & have a nice weekend!

Encanto sell their products on ebay. The 8 oz bottles are enough for 2 treatments.

I went to my local hairdresser in Discovery Bay. You can really go to any stylist you like/trust. The product comes with detailed instructions how to use it and they are easy to follow.

Thanks a lot Lace.

Just wanted to check with you...is this a one day treatment or have to wait for four days as mentioned in the posts above??

Also do I need to buy only the treatment or also the clarifying shampoo's which they sell along with the treatment solution.?

Thanks

priyapravin:

You need to buy the shampoo too (it's 3 components: the shampoo, the actual straightening treatment and the after treatment conditioner) - you can continue using the shampoo after the treatment. It is sodium free - highly recommended to use after the Keratin Treatment.

You can basically wash your hair the very next day, tie it up or do whatever you want to do with it. The treatment I had done at TH2 about 4 months ago required that I go back after 3 days for the second stage... The Encanto product does all that in one day.

It is recommended to wait 2 weeks before colouring your hair.

wow thats cool....thank you so much lace for ur advice and also for coming up with this cool idea of buying it online and getting it applied ...it's really expensive to get it done in a salon in HK compared to singapore and USA.

Do keep in mind that the 'one day' treatments DO contain Formaldahyde thus are produced much cheaper than the ones that are Formaldahyde free. There are many issues with the use of Formaldahyde which you can search online. The original Relaxing products contain this but the newer, improved and yes more expoensive products have eliminated it due to the problems associated. It really depends if you are concerned about the use of Formaldahyde or not so do your research.

D-man ,

Form what I know, if the product does not contain formaldehyde , the treatment wont last for more than a couple of days. Also the risk is for the stylist and not the client. So if the stylist takes proper care,it shouln't be an issue.BTW may i ask which salon you work for? Also it is not cheaper at all but yes it is definately cheaper than paying 3500 HKD! since I know salons in SG using same product as HK salon's but charging much less.

Hi Priya,

Actually that is not the case. Products that do not contain formaldahyde (done propery) can last up to 4 months as it has for many of our clients. The risk in using formaldahyde based products is for both the client and the stylist, the only possible way to not be affected would be for both parties to wear full gas masks. Being that we have looked into a variety of products I can tell you as a fact that the NON famaldahyde products are quite a lot more expensive than those that have it. Its one of those things that concern some people and not others so as I said it really is up to the individual to determine if they mind or not.

When comparing prices from different countries you also need to consider ALL the costs involved such as rents, salaries and all other opperational costs. You cant expect service rates to be the same as costs vary greatly from place to place. There are many variables to calculate when doing such a service not just the cost of the product itself.

Acording to the site rules I am not able to disclose the salon I work for as it is considered self promotion which is not allowed.

Just wondering why there is so much difference between the price quoted by paul Gerard and TH2.paul gerard quotes 1800 and TH2 3500.Shocking unless there is a valid reason!

There would be a number of reasons for the price difference, the initial ones are;

The products used are not the same thus varying in price.

One is performed by assistants or juniors whilst the other is performed entirely by senior stylists trained by the US product company.

TH2 price is also incluse of a hair cut and blow dry by a senior stylist

The price at TH2 is for the first treatment usually using a lot more product then any follow up treatments are lower in price.

These would be the main points for the price difference and it is really just a matter of choice as to what you like or who you like to perform the treatment. Using assistants or juniors to perform the treatment is not necessarily bad but there are specifics that need to be paid attention to. It is however a good way to keep the price down for the consumer.

The haircut I got was trimming of the fringe...

Most of the actual work was done by an assistant of the senior stylist.

D-man,

What follow up treatment are you talking about?I thought that the keratin treatment is not like the permanent straightening where you have to redo the newly grown part of your hair.

From what I understand, your hair will go back to what it was after 3-4 months. So the newly grown hair wont be any different from the old.

Also when you say that the price includes cut & blow dry , does that mean that if the client does not want to do the cut (or doesn't need one ) , the charges will be less??

Your stylist can do the whole head - with the Brazilian Keratin Treatment your hair will not be 'double processed' doing that.

Hey. I've got the brazilian blowdry and it worked out fantastic. I have since referred the guy to four other work friends who are equally happy. The magician's name is Louis at Louis & Co. His charges may have increased, he charged me HK$1900 for my length of hair, slightly longer than shoulder. The whole thing it takes about 2 hours.

I bought the Encanto Brazilian treatment from ebay and am pleased to say the results are fantastic. I did it myself at home but next time will get a friend to help out. It's really strong stuff, though, and it did make my eyes watery.

I got my product delivered today.I am planning to get it done from a salon using my product since I do not have an iron with those temperature indicators.

Was just wondering that my instructions so not say about leaving the product on for a day and then washing it off.It just lists down the 5 steps.Do we need to leave it on for 24jrs before washing the hair??

Hi Priyapravin,

I took Lace's advice and followed the five steps down to a tee. As long as you follow the instructions, you can wash your hair the next day if you please.

Shoe Girl,

I'm glad you are happy with the result. I would not have dared to do it on my own though - too difficult to reach the hair at the back of the head :-)

Lace,

I had mirrors set up so I could see the back, so it wasn't too difficult. It was just the watery eyes and having my nose run that caused the problems. I had to get my boyfriend to run into the room with and grab some tissues so I could blow my nose, which was quite amusing at the time.

The other amazing thing about this product is that it seems to have made my hair so much stronger. In the past, whenever I'd wash my hair, bit tufts of hair would come out, and now there's hardly any, and also when combing wet hair I would end up with heaps of hair on my comb, and now there's hardly any.

So thank you for recommending this product. I'm truly grateful.

Wondering if it is necessary to use an iron heated upto 400 F.

Shoegirl , what iron did you use??Does it have temperatures upto 400 F?

Please support our advertisers:
Shoe Girl 15 yrs ago
Priyapravin,

I think it probably is necessary because you need a very high temperature to "seal" in the keratin onto the hair strands. Maybe with lower temperatures it's not as effective. I'm not sure. I just didn't want to risk going through the whole exercise only to find that it didn't hold because the temperature was too low.

I used a professional iron I bought at a hairdressers' supply shop and it had a temperature dial so I was able to select 200 degrees Celcius, which I think is around 400 F. It's similar to the GHD iron with thin tongs.

I would never normally use it at such a high temperature as this because my hair is very fine and I don't want it to sizzle.

I got it done at the hairdresser in Discovery Bay. I just called, asked for a straightening and stated that I will bring my own product. They had absolutely no problem with that. The prices differ between top stylist (HK$ 1.200) down to junior stylist (HK$ 800).

The salon at the North Plaza in DB quoted me HK$ 1.000.

I get it done about every 4 month - doing touch ups in between myself. The instructions are very easy to follow - so if you have a friend who has some skills with a straightening iron, your friend could actually do it too.

The telephone number of the DB hairdresser at the main plaza is: 2987 4112

Maybe you could look at this website~ It’s a blog of a HK girl, and she posted out all the processes when she was having her Brazilian blowout done. Sorry that it’s in Chinese, but there are lots of photos on her blog.

http://apple113.blogspot.com/2011/01/brazilian-blowout.html

I think her hair actually looks a lot smoother and frizz free after the treatment, I am so eager to get my hair done after reading her blog! And I don’t think this treatment is that dangerous as a lot of people have done it before and they didn’t have any negative effect…So I am actually not that worried about it. By the way, more salons in HK are offering Brazilian blowout now, like “Hair culture”, “P.O.P Hairdressing”, “Toni & Guy” etc.

I have had my hair straightened with 3 methods the first one being the ""Japenese "which can dry your hair out but lasts long. The second treatment being the "keratin" which was done in one day plus colouring at the same time(cost a lot)but my roots went curly after 1 week so went back.About 2 months ago I had the Brazilian done and is ok ,still not like it says walk out the shower if you check out you-tube postings the people use straighteners as well to maintain the "straight look".

So still a bit of faffing about and buy 4 of the only guaranteed to stay straight for 12 weeks products and over $2,000 gone too.Not sure how my hair will be after I start swimming and had coloured yesterday.Hopefully will stand the test of time:)

I've had my hair cut, coloured and straightened (Brazilian Blowout) at Paul Gerrard, Central. I have western fizzy hair in the humidity. The senior stylists are western so no language barrier. The cost of the straightening is expensive but it includes the aftercare shampoo and conditioner (big bottles, lasts months). The salon was professional but relaxed and friendly. The staff went out of there way to be helpful and accommodating. I was very happy with the cut, colour and straightening. You can wash your hair the day after the Brazilian treatment so no waiting. They gave me written information on the Brazilian Blowout treatment when i went in to inquire which was very comprehensive. Their website also has detailed advice on how to manage frizzy western hair in the humidity. I would definitely go back.

my daughter wants this done for her birthday, but a very well known hair dresser, has just quoted me $2000 HKD, when i first spoke to her about it it was only $1500, she seems to always chaange her prices to sut her, not empressed with the company as she did the same thing when my daughter had her hair done for christmas quoted me one thing, but charged diffrent when done, and it wasnt how she wanted it, and wasnt worth $2000 HKD for a bit of blonde put in the top, which is all she did, she charged me $3000 for hair extentions, when i was quoted $1500 to start wiith, then a few months later sent me a text offering to do it again for only $2500 all in, but she did a very rushed job didnt wash my hair before putting them in and they all fell out within two weeks i tried to contact her but she ignored my text and calls, am just annoyed once agian she told me one thing and now quoted me another, so ive contacted the main site to ask them how much this treatment is,

I had the Brazilian Blowout at Paul Gerrard a couple of weeks ago.

When first done, it looks quite flat, but after the first wash the root begins to lift. Now, two weeks later - I wash it and let it self-dry,then run a brush through it.(My hair is long, highlighted and layered).

The cost was 3,000HK$ which included two large bottles (shampoo and conditioner - the price tag on each of them is $420)

I have been told it will last 3 months. Re the tips above on the sulphate shampoo/conditioners from The Body Shop - thanks!
