Hi there,
I have just spent my first year working in Hong Kong as a U.S. citizen. I'm due to file U.S. tax returns and I have no idea what forms to fill out and what supporting documents are needed. e.g. I didn't get any documents from my bank for tax filing purposes like the 1099 we get in the U.S.
I'm very lost. Could anyone please help, or recommend an accountant in HK that specializes in U.S. taxes? I would really appreciate the help.
Thank you!

Did you find the right source yet? There are folks who specialize in US taxes. Southwest Tax & Financial Planning Limited in Central, US Asia Tax & Business Services Ltd among them. The IRS also comes to HK each year and sets up free meetings times at the US Consulate. Visit the Consulate site to see when they are here next. Consulate is all by pre appointed times now, no drop by visits any more. Consulate also has a full set up of tax paper work you can collect on site. As an overseas USA tax payer you get an automatic filing extension of 2 months from the April 15 date. After that you need to file paperwork for further extensions. Good luck, USA folks are part of that elite world wide group that even if we don't live there, no derive income from there we must continue to file and pay taxes.

If you are prepared to pay for top advice, PWC has a good international practice. KPMG and E&Y also have respectable practices. Not sure of the local practices. Bing is your friend.

Unless you have a very complicated situation, it is not too difficult to fill out a "typical" US expat tax return. It's just a matter of where to fill in all the blanks.
