I'm sure I've seen nylon netting available in some shops near and along Reclaimation Street but not sure if this is what you're looking for. I will keep an eye on the exact shop and address when I next go around there for a little walk.

In the meantime, don't be too despondent!

alternatively, visit one of the many fabric shops in Sham Shui Po. if you happen to be in Mega Box, Kowloon Bay, take a look in Spot Light, they have a generous selection of sewing material.

These are more to do with safety and construction rather than mountaineering but I'll see what I can find on it later:

like you said local business is local and although the internet helps but isn't essential. specialists or shops for certain items are concentrated in particular locations to make shopping easier for the end consumer if for example you are looking for power tools or ceramic tiles as these wouldn't normally be available in your local park'n'shop...

there are so many shops selling webbing in Sham Shui Po that you would trip over them! they will sell you "samples" at $2-3 per yard.

All kinds of DIY/building materials stores carry nylon webbing. Also, the shop at the RHKYC has some (helps to be/know a member, but they will still sell to you otherwise - might help to claim that you have a boat/are a visiting yachtsman).

Without doubt, one of the best hardware shops is located in Quarry Bay, in Pan Hoi Street, near to Tai Koo place, near no# 94. Run by Mrs Yeung, friendly and stocks heaps of stuff. I purchased webbing designed to lift heavy goods by a crane, breaking strength a couple of ton. It is green in color and about 2 inches thick. They may also have other webbing there. looks like this but green http://www.tigerindustrial.com/TH/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=7 Cost was only a couple of hundred dollars.

let me know if you are interested, I have a couple still which can go cheap, or check the shop.

As far as wood, have you seen the half wood/half synthetic planks availabe here? Water/termite resistant, good in the sun. May not look as good as teak, not too bad, like what they use on the exteriors of some driving ranges, pools etc, and a big plus does not react to the humidity and no need to treat, guaranteed for 10 years. hope this may help you.

no prob, all is good. Try Chamonix in Mongkok (HK mountaineering centre), or Mountain Services in CWB/Tin Hau border, all should have webbing there.

bougainville, if you haven't got your webbing yet, just to let you know I went to Reclaimation Street and Canton Road (Mongkok area) this morning to buy a tool box and saw a good few shops selling the stuff. I saw one canvas shop with the green webbing you want (add: 9, 17 Dundas Street, Kowloon). Also check out Hings Plastics on 904 Canton Road.

Seriously if you really need the stuff, just walked around the many shops in Reclaimation Street and Canton Road where Soy Street intersects the two, you'll find what you need.

If you still want climbing webbing, I can give you addresses in Mong Kok and Fortress Hill for CE rated webbing. If you're really polite, I could potentially get you discounts in either shop, too.

They both normally stock rolls by the 100m or shorter lengths of.

PM for details.

Not all is tubed, though most is.

I'll phone the shop owner and ask if he has flat stock.

Half of my kit is made up of flat tape so it's not going to be a marathon.

As per my PM, it's a 200m roll of flat, not tube, Dyneema tape.

In stock, I checked on the phone.

Complete length, not sewn slings. Some of us still make our own slings up, especially if you need a 20m sling or it needs to be threaded through a hole in the rock.

It's a climbing shop. They don't do deck fit outs, unfortunately. ;-)

Lots of tape is just a polyxxx based nylon. It's still CE rated for strength but not as strong/light as Spectra or Dyneema. Dyneema is waterproof and reasonably UV resistant, as is Spectra.

Spectra tube will be thin/small because of the strength. Climbing slings are generally rated to break at 2200 kgs regardless of material. Therefore a spectra sling will be thinner and lighter than a standard nylon sling.

Far from being a marathon, I didn't even have to leave my chair... ;-)

Frankly, I don't think you need the strength of Dyneema or Spectra. You just need the waterproof and UV resistant properties.

Your best bet is Mong Kok area, Reclamation Street. I have a friend with one of those shops that sews vast canopies in a 6ft square area...he has a shop full of fabrics and webbing and we've used him to sew slings/rope bags/boat covers...etc.

That would involve a stroll to MK as opposed to a phone call but still a long way from a marathon.
