We are travelling with our 2.5 yr old to Kota soon. Any suggestions what are fun and appropriate for kids to do there apart from those facilities in the resort?

I would recommend staying at the Shangri - La ( tanjung aru) which has plenty of things that your 2.5 year old will love - swimming pool, airconditioned play room, fish feeding . other things you can do around are:-
1) travel to the marine sanctuary and snorkel/dive, eat lovely sea food
2) Watch the orang utans in Shang Ri la Rasa Ria which has a free shuttle from Shang Ri La Tanjung Aru
3) Take a tour of the Kota Kinabalu Zoo ( your child will love the talking mynas, rhino, elephants, tigers etc)
4) be a culture vulture and soak up the Sabah native people way of living, check with your hotel for more details
5) have some good malaysian curry on the waterfront after a massage that costs RM 30 only for an hour !

Thanks everyone :) That sounds really fun! In fact we will be staying at the Shangri-la Rasa Ria as I heard it has a nicer beach though it's farther away from downtown and the airport (but I figure that we won't be going downtown that much as I'm preggy and with an active toddler).

we managed to book a private car transfer from the airport to Rasa Ria (it's a 45-60 min journey) that came with 2 car seats (very rare in KK - one for baby and one for toddler). the guy who runs the company is an English chap who has set up home there. he was fab, we gave him a shopping list before we arrived and he did a supermarket run for us (charged at cost). we also booked him for day trips and he was so thoughtful, had books, toys, drinks for the kids and wet wipes too. i can PM his details if anyone is interested. my daughter still raves about him.

Thanks to everyone for very useful posts. We are going to Rasa Ria with a 2 year old next week. Is it possible for you to send the contact details for the driver with a car seat.
