Extended Stay in HK

I'm an American student doing an internship in HK in the Wanchai area for about 45 days (June 19-Aug1). I'm looking for affordable housing, preferably somewhere with internet and a semi-furnished room (with a bed).

How is the wanchai area in general? Would you recommend staying there for this period of time? Or would you suggest looking elsewhere close by to the MTR (I've heard that Wanchai is easily accessible via the MTR)?

Also, what do you suggest about money? How do most serviced apartments/apartments accept payment? I understand my American bank would charge me 3% -- is there a smarter way to go about doing this?

Thanks!

@GreenValleys: I will not be on any visa, as my internship is unpaid. I've received a host of e-mails regarding serviced apartments on Wanchai road and on Lockhart road...are these areas safe? I've read about the history of Wanchai and I am becoming weary about living in this area. Would you recommend living around the convention center or closer to causeway bay? Although I am looking for affordable accommodations, safety is one of my top priorities.

"I'm from Singapore and had lived in Shanghai for close to 6 years,

relocated to Hong Kong in October 2009.

I was looking for a temporary accommodation before I decide on a

permanent apartment to rent in HK. Hence, I chose to stay at

Yesinnspace (Mongkok, Anchor Street) from 29 October 2009 to 12

January 2010, having read very good online reviews that they had

decent rooms, convenient location, and very helpful staff.

True to the review, the staff at Yesinnspace have been extremely

helpful and friendly during my extended stay there (when changing

rooms, payment arrangements, requiring extra bed for minimal charges,

forgot keys, etc).

Location is very good. About 6 minutes walk to Mongkok Station, 10

minutes to Mongkok East Station, 6 minutes walk to Olympic Station.

Note that these 3 stations are on different MTR lines, so that will

literally get you to most "must-see", "must-go" locations in HK for

both leisure or work. If you're adventurous, there are also alot of

shuttle bus and KMB bus services which gets you to everywhere.

The rooms are small, but has everything you need. Cosy and

comfortable environment. Quiet at night.

Strongly recommend and book early. Enjoy your stay!
