- Keep everything clean. No crumbs, no food stains. This includes cupboards. Empty those out and do a deep clean.
- Wipe the counter off often. Use some detergent, not just water. Don't forget to move appliances like microwaves and coffee maker and wipe those off (including the bottom and back). The feet of appliances tend to become quite icky and thus attractive to ants.
- Don't forget to move your fridge and wipe under there every couple of weeks.
- Go to Japan Home or equivalent and buy a ton of plastic (or glass) containers. Put anything edible where you have opened the original box in a container, including sugar, flour, crackers, raisins, candy, crisps, baking soda, spices, etc, etc. Flour packages are prone to leak even when unopened, so pour flour directly in a plastic container when you get home.
- Salt can be kept on the counter. Ants won't touch that.
- If you have a sugar dish for coffee, put it in the fridge.
- Get "Combat" ant bait from the supermarket and use it. Note that this will attract more ants for a couple of days (that's the way it works), then they will start dying off. Note also that after a week or so the bait is ineffective and should be replaced with fresh units.
- Find any wall cracks (look inside cupboards) and seal them. Find any loose windows/doors and seal those.
You will probably still get an ant or five, but these measures should significantly decrease the ant population.

I should note that since we have two small kids we only use the ant bait traps. These can be placed up out of reach. If your kids are older or you don't have any you can of course use more potent sprays and such as well.
