my mother in law's application for a tourist visa to attend our wedding reception on Aug 1st, 2009 has just been rejected. what can we do to appeal or request approval. It's really sad if she can't be here for my wife's big day. Please help! Advice...anything is appreciated.
My wife and I are currently in USA, and my mother in law is in HK.

It really depends on the reason for rejection.
for example if the reason for rejection is for previous immigration rule infraction, (visa overstay, etc.) then it would be very difficult to get a visa to US, ever.
if the reason is "technical" for example, "intention to immigrate to the US" or errors/inconsistencies in the visa application. She can try again, some days you get the visa officer in a better mood.
US legal system works slowly, if you appeal, it may take years before you get a hearing.

thanks for your reply. having another symbolic ceremony hk is a last resort. We really hope to get my wife's mom over here.
As for infraction, that is not the case. She has never been to the US, and was applying for a visa for the first time. She does have insecurities in face of authority. Some older folks are that way. I think we might re-apply, and hope the experience will be different.

On which grounds was she refused her visa?
Usually depending on the reasoning they give it is very hard for them to admit they were wrong the first time and overturn an initial decision...besides this process takes forever.
I think it would be quicker to reapply making sure ur application is water-tight but can't really make a jugdement as don't know why she was refused!
