Margaret Court

ORIGINAL POST

I have to attend a wedding and would like to get a dress made. I've checked some of the old posts and Margaret Court's name has been mentioned quite often. As the posts are all quite old, has anyone used her recently who could advise me on approximate cost of getting a dress made, as I have absolutely no idea how much to expect to pay? Also, does she stock fabric and lining materials or would I have to supply my own? How long should I allow to get a dress made ... the wedding is at the end of July. Thanks for any information!

I used Margaret Court last summer to have a dress made for a wedding. I brought in a picture of the dress I wanted and they did a very good job with it - I got a lot of compliments. However, they don't really have a lot of fabric to choose from. If you want something special, I would get the fabric from Western Market or Shamshuipo then bring it in to the ladies at Margaret Court. You could always choose the design, get measured then ask the ladies at Margaret Court to tell you how much fabric you need to buy - this would made the process easy enough.

My dress with fabric (not much lining, a standard fabric they had in stock) was about $3000. It took a couple of weeks to be made as fittings are needed and I had to go in after work for them. You definitely have time to have yours made by July.

Hi Sapphire

I am not sure how much you are wanting to spend but if you wanted to go to Shenzhen you could have a dress made including fabric (heaps of choice at the fabric market at Lo Wu Commerical Centre) and delivery to HK for less than a quarter of the price quoted above for Margaret Court. I have been very impressed with the tailoring quality from my tailor in Shenzhen. If you are going by a picture rather than copying an existing dress then you will likely need a fitting to have it tailored to fit you perfectly so that would mean two trips to Shenzhen (or have the alterations done in HK). You would also need to factor in the cost of the Shenzhen visa of course.

Just a thought.

Very true about Shenzhen. For me it didn't work because of all the repeated trips needed for fittings - it just seemed too inconvenient considering I still need to work. I had the initial fitting, then 2 more before I was happy.

Thanks very much both of you for that information. I don't mind paying around $2000-$3000max, as long as I'm going to be happy with the finished garment. I realize that it would be much cheaper to go to Shenzhen, but to be honest I can't be bothered with the hassle of getting a visa and having to go up and down there 2 or 3 times for fittings, and then there's the possibility that I wouldn't be happy with it ... Starbucks, I think you are very lucky that you have found a good taylor in SZ who you are happy with because I have many friends who have not been happy, and I wouldn't want to be in the position of having a wedding to attend and a dress that I'm not happy with. So, for that reason, I think it may be better for me to find a dressmaker locally who has been recommended. I'll give Margaret Court a call in a couple of weeks. Does anyone have an up to date email address for her? ... I did try one that I found on another thread but it was returned to me. Thanks!

Margaret Court does not seem to be one person - it's a business with a group of women who do the sewing. I first tried to email them from the website but had no response. I would suggest calling the phone number on the site and/or going in person to speak to them. If you call to say you're coming they will stay open until you can come after work. I think it's more efficient just to go in person. They are right in the heart of Lan Kwai Fong. The address should be on the website.

Good luck! I was happy with my dress.

Thanks very much. I'd assumed as much. Do they speak/understand English ok? ... wouldn't like to have problems trying to explain what it is that I want.

Hi Sapphire, I think you can try Mayeelok. I got them to tailor make an evening dress for my friend's wedding reception 2 months ago and I was very happy with it! I told them the design and fabric I wanted and Mayee, the seamstress, was able to draft the design immediately and gave me lots of advices! And she's willing to offer free alternations even after the wedding reception! She spoke quite good English and the price is reasonable. You can find the contacts on their website (they're in Central). Hope this helps.
