ORIGINAL POST

Hi, my baby has 2 passports. How do I differentiate them?

ie, do I make one the main one and travel with it all the time and the other one to be only used when entering that country? Or do I flexibly use the nationtality that does not require visa on entering one country?Thank you very much for your advice in advance.

you could/should flexibly use them but need to be careful to only use one given passport for a given country (i.e. use the same passport for the US all the time)

practically speaking most people use one of the two always and the other only for certain exceptions

Always use Passport X when entering and exiting country X. Always use passport Y when entering and exiting country Y. For all other countries use whichever is more convenient with regards to visa requirements and so forth. If the requirements are equal just pick one.

Hi everyone, thank you so much for the advises. Got the idea.

BTW, may I ask if you are practicing anything special as preperation for the day the child has to choose one nationality? My girl will decide in 18 years time, whichever she chooses will be her decision which I will 100% support but, I would like to give her as much ideas as possible for her own decision. ( I know it's really early )

Cara, if you had to choose one, what will be the main consideration you will rely on to make the decision?

Thank you so much!!

maybe i have missed something but why she has to chose her nationality? she has two passports so she is a national of two countries. as long as she keeps the two passports, nothing will change that in my view.

or does the hk govt force you to chose one or the other when you are 18y old (in case one of her passport is a chinese one)?

the time when there is a choice at 18 is if you hold a USA passport but have another citizenship - if you keep your USA then you have to pay taxes on your global income for the rest of your life I think per current rules. So that is one passport that you might hold for your child (our daughter was born in the USA but neither my husband or I are US citizens) and we got one for her so we didnt have to do all the visas etc.

Hi Cara, thank you so much and kiwimmc too!

My girl has dual passport/citizenship/nationality but, both countries do not allow dual after the child at legal adult age. At 18, she will have to choose one nationality and throw away the eligibility for the other.

I guess will leave her to decide with her own points of consideration at that time.

Once again, thank you very much everyone!!

Xshoequeen,

I assume one of the two countries is China and I know many people who hold dual passports with one of them being China. Just don't tell them and nothing can happen to you...

I doubt China somehow! Countries such as Germany do make you choose at 18.

For ours we have both HKSAR and UK passports. UK ones used to go into UK, and can be used for places such as USA visa free and HK passport for coming back into HK (you need passport with ID card at immigration even for PR at that age). Obviously this also allows China return home permit.

i know too many people who have german and one other passport, so germany does certainly not make you chose

Hi cookie09, our daughter is a French and Japanese. France requires her to choose at 18 and Japan, 20. Thing is, when we applied for the Japanese passport, we had to register that she has dual nationality, the reason, her other passport number, etc. And I am sure that every time we renew her passport, they will be reminding us!! Of course it would be nice that she has both passports but, I think the chances are really slim......

cookie, you may know people but Germany does make you chose, at the age of 23 - I mixed 18 up with others.

I have NZ and Canadian passports......no big issues there.......except when I wne on my honeymoon from NZ and took my Canadian passport by accident and didn't realise the implications till NZ wouldn't let me back in hehehe....

Oh and then there was the time I entered Colombia 10 years apart on two different nationalities and they freaked thinking I was a spy or something....caused some major confusion but all worked out in the end.

Then there was the time I was asleep in the back of the car with my now husband driving, who being a USA citizen decided to take a short cut through Canada to get to the camp we were going to, forgetting I was not a USA citizen and didn't even have a passport on me. Canada let us in, USA wouldn't let us back in, and we got stuck in no mans land between the borders till my Canadian passport could be fed exed.

But as long as your kids aren't as dumb as me they'll be fine :-)

Our kids have dual USA /NZ passports..... I thought you could be non resident for tax purposes if you do not earn money in the USA, hold property or bank accounts? Am I wrong?

You are wrong. US citizens owe taxes on their worldwide income, full stop. There is a tax credit for the amount of tax that you pay to a country with a tax treaty with the USA -- so for example, since we pay more to China than we would owe to the US, we file every year and end up not owing anything.
