Have not used that, but we do use VOIP exclusively in the form of Skype and it works fine. We have a phone number in Sweden and one in the US. They ring at our Skype account, in this case a Skype phone. We also call out with Skype.

I will grant that Skype may not be the cheapest always, but it does have:

- Subscriptions. Unlimited calls to 36 countries for less than US$10/month. Or one country for less than US$5/month. Course, if you only call the Phillipines that country is not included so no joy for helpers.

- Incoming calls from up to 10 numbers per account. Great if you want a number in Hk and one in, say, the US.

"Hmmm- as I recall Skype $ting$ you with a "connection charge" for each & every "external" call."

This is not my experience. Anyway if you have a subscription the point is moot on most calls.

Thanks for your updates.

Yeah, Skype charged for both IN & OUT and it sounds expensive.

I posted this question as they promoted their Free Trial to me... No commitment penalty in 1st month, with IDD calls & video calls to overseas...

Depends on how much you call. Skype has optional fixed price services to and from quite a few countries. So even if you call 5 hours a day you're paying the same. Drives the cost/minute right down.

There's also the big advantage of a being able to use a Skype phone. It's just like a normal phone, but uses Skype. So your SkypeIn numbers ring on it and you use it for calls. No need to sit in front of your computer. We also take our phone on vacation and can use it wherever there is WiFi. Makes calling home from vaca dirt cheap.

Oh, I finally made up my mind!!

As I was advised that I could make voice calls, video calls and send SMS via that service, I just signed up for their free trial program. If I am happy with it, it's just $68/mth afterwards. Why not give it a goal? Thank you for your recommendations anyway. :)

how reliable is skype - i.e. would you give up a real phone line and just use skype?

We haven't had a "real" phone line in several years. We use Skype with a Skype phone. So it's more than reliable enough for us. The quality is fine and only in rare cases will there be any noticeable lag.

On some rare busy days, like around Christmas, it might take 2 attempts to connect, but otherwise it's basically like using a traditional phone.

In any case we also have our cell phones.

We use skype for all international calls. This could be video calls to family or conference calls for work. We also have a landline which I'd use for the few local calls we make. We've never used our landline for international calls and only keep it because it's very cheap ($300 or so every two months, I think). This is probably still a waste of money and I really should get around to cancelling our subscription. Skype's sound quality is excellent - much better than HK landline quality.

Couple of things about skype, which I use both at work and at home....

Firstly its cheaper using skype than a normal landline to many countries, even with an IDD plan for the landline.

Secondly if both parties have skype its free, and you can do video calls etc

Thirdly the quality has really improved, the only time I really have a major issue is when calling Indonesia and the Philipinnes. Having said that for these countries you're probably better off buy a card to phone those countries as those cards tend to be a lot cheaper.

As axptguy said you can use a skype phone, and you can even get skype on some mobile phones these days. You can also forward your skype to your mobile phone too. You can also send texts via skype and you only get charged if the call lasts longer than 10 seconds (or something like that) ie if it connects and drops right away you do not get charged.

I used to have a Skypein number purely to save my relatives money (ie it was a uk number so they wouldn't be charged) but they now mostly use skype too.

Of course the quality of the calls also depends on a) your connection and b) the equipment you use. If you get a cheap headset with cheap microphone it will affect the quality as you would expect
