My 3 yr 7 month old son has yet to start writing. His pencil grip is also not okay. As for reading , he can read alphabets but not words. I have tried sitting with him, and teaching pencil grip and writing, but its difficult to get him to sit in one place. His verbal vocabulary is fantastic though. Really worried about his writing skills since he will start 'big' school this Sept. Any tips or toys which help him make write ?

There are lots of games and activities to help wiht fine motor skills perfect fo 3 years old and not writing.
- finger painting, shaving foam on bathtub wall,
- playdough- the best!- pinch, squeeze, pound, hid coins and dig them out
-working in a vertical surface such as an easel or paper taped to window or mirror for colouring, drawing big shapes and scribbles
- make sure he does rough and tumble play using all muscles of the back, wheelbarrow walks to strngthen the upper back etc.
also all the ideas mentioned above.
He is not even four yet and will learn a lot more at school next year. You will be surprised at how fast it comes especially when it is fun!

I am surprised that anyone would expect a 3-4 years old child to write/read words honestly.
My daughter is almost 4.5, enjoying school a lot, and only started to try writing her name a few month ago. I don't think they were expecting her to do that earlier at school either (she is in K1). And when she is not in the mood she doesn't even recognise letters either.
Now she has pre-writing exercises from the school to do almost everyday (English and Chinese), and really enjoys doing her homework but they have just started recently.
At this stage I don't want to be my children's teacher, and have never tried to teach them writing/drawing/reading etc... I don't have the patience and skills and I leave it to the school, who I assume knows when is the suitable time to get started on those different activities successfully.

Remember in Europe, many schools do not start formal eduaction until 6-7 years, so please don't panic that they're not writing at 3. Let them enjoy their playtime with no pressure.

Help him by buying him playdough, silly putty and squeezable balls. First he needs to strengthen his hands. Boys don't have strong fine motor skills. Help him get stronger and he will improve. I didn't do any writing with my kids til they were 5, but you may need to in your situation. I'm a primary teacher. Kids should mostly play til they are 5 or 6. Having a strong body helps concentration and sitting also. Let him swim, run and squeeze anything that's a bit tough for him.

Is he better after the school started? Actually, my son got the same problem before, I can understand how stress you feel as HK parents usually trained their kids very well before 3 years old.
My son seems better after I let him to start art class. I really think drawing, painitng and some craftworks can help him to build up fine motor skills. Let me know if you wanna to know more :)
