Hey all, has anyone both had experience of applying for in Hong Kong and the value of having it in the first place?

I think that if you have an accident in some places your insurance company may have a case not to cover you if you dont have such a licence...
You have to the submit the following documents to The Transport Department:
1. Application form with original signature;
2. Copy of your HKID card;
3. Copy of your current driving licence;
4. 2 new and recent photographs with plain background, siz 40mm x 50mm;
5. Cheque
Here is the application form for your reference:

It's quite easy to have. As posted by Ed, you can print the application form, bring all the requirements to nearest branch of Transport Dept (in person and you can pay in cash), and you can get your International License in a few minutes (depending on the length of the queue).
It looks awful though as it's a shabbily printed card in the outside and shabby quality printing on ordinary white paper inside.
I use it often when I'm in the US, the car rental companies recognize it (I haven't tried using my HK driver's licence. I don't know if they're going to accept it too?). The only problem is it's only good for one year. You apply again once it expires and you need to use it.

Does anyone know the fee for this annual license?

HK$80 for the permit, approx HK$40 for the photos

Does the International licence have a photo?
I can't imagine using my HK licence in another country as it just looks like a cheap plastic card and doesn't even have photo..
I usually use a european licence when overseas, which looks more like a driver's licence..=)

you need to submit 2 photos with your application...the permit is a cheap looking booklet with a chopped photo glued to the back page...
there is debate as to where it is required or not..many say that your current license, if in English,will be acceptable in most countries...i would doubt that the HKDL is tho, because of the lack of photo..thus i cary my hkdl and idp when in canada

I got my IDL for a trip to India. Some countries accept your normal driving license, some don't. My normal license is British.

the international license is the same regardless of which country issues it, only the color changes. so i don't understand the comments about how shabby it looks. i have one from the US, HK, and JP. They are all the same.
International license are very useful to have even though many countries don't require them, as others do. It also gets you out of speeding tickets in some places as they don't have any easy way to process or follow-up on tickets.
It only takes about 5 minutes to get one at the transport dept. In admiralty you can get pictures just downstairs at a shop.
I have used mine in many countries to rent cars or bikes.

Actually i've used my HK licence several times to hire cars in the UK.

Same as cd, my experience in Europe is that HK license is more than enough.
