To move, or not to move?

My husband and I are considering moving to HK for 18months. We're 30, no kids, and work in advertising/pr respectively.

I realise this is a big question, but can anyone give me an insight into what it's like to live and work in HK, and would you recommend it?

I would definitely recommend it. The quality of life is great (if you have a decent salary).

Besides, it's only 18 months. If you really hate it, you'll be leaving soon. I'm always of the opinion that trying something new like this is typically a good thing.

As for what HK is like, that's a big question:

- Urban intensity but with huge green areas and beaches very close.

- Vibrant.

- Different from a Western city without being entirely alien.

- A great place to live if you have a decent salary.

Yes but only if;

A/you can handle 18 months of pollution and;

B/you have a significant job offer $$$$$

other than that, for DINK's HK is awesome!

I moved to Hk at the same age, intending to stay for the same amount of time - I took leave without pay from my job!

We had also never been to HK before and I can remember seeing the old tenaments on the drive in from Kai Tak airport, thinking is that what I'm going to live in?

I have now been here 18 years. In that time, i have seen many people come and go - some regretfully and others thankfully. HK is not for everyone but you will never know how you feel about it unless you come. Whether you do or not depends on whether you want an adventure.

i'm sure you realize that showing up in HK without a job and the required visa or right to land is not legal (tho some do it)...getting a job in your area of expertise in this way would likely prove difficult...sort out the job BEFORE you come over and enjoy everything HK has to offer...if as mentioned you can handle the pollution and crowds (never been to London but can't imagine it being worse than here)...there are countless upsides to living here..i'd say go for it!

A couple more things:

- HK is LOUD!

- What is considered polite and rude by the "locals" is not necessarily the same stuff as for you.

- As mentioned, HK is expensive. Make sure you have $$$ if you want a "decent" life.

- Housing is very expensive compared to most places.

there are so many things to do in HK that you can't do in london. boating in the summer, hikes, swimming etc plus there is a vibe in hk that london just doesn't have. its a very vibrant city (not that london isn't) hk is more 24 hours.

i would come here, its only 18 months and will give you a different perspective of life (which would be very dull with no risks)!

come here with the right attitude and you will love it. my husband (also from london) never wants to go back!
