Moving to Hong Kong and Looking for a place to rent for when I arrive

I'm 25 and moving to Hong Kong from the US on June 26th to teach English. I have booked a hotel for my first 4 days in hopes that I will find a place to rent for about a year by July 1st. I am nervous about my 4 day window and wanted to find out if this seems possible/realistic. I have been scoping out hong kong craigslist every day and this site but am really hoping for some feedback and advice on where I can look and some things I may be able to do to secure accommodations upon my arrival. My price range is between HK2500 and HK4500/month. I don't need a lot of space (I know it's tight space wise in Hong Kong as it is), just a place to sleep and the basic amenities. I would appreciate any help I can get as an outsider with little knowledge of apartment hunting in HK. Thanks!

finding a place on your own for that budget will mean likely living in an extremely small flat in a very remote location...for your budget you should strongly consider a flatshare, you would likely feel more comfortable and you'd be closer to the action...look here

I have no problem with sharing a flat and in fact I plan on doing so in order to cut costs a bit. I sent out some messages on the share flats page on this site so I'll hope to hear from someone soon. I hear that Lamma Island is quite inexpensive but can be quite a commute back to Hong Kong Island. Could anyone give me a little info on how reliable the ferries are? I don't mind an hour long commute if it's going to be cheaper, I trek at least an hour to get to work now living in NY. I just wonder if, during typhoon season, the ferries are not in service frequently? Thanks again for the input!

Try searching in the net for guest houses in causeway bay. You might be able to find a good deal on monthly basis without paying 2 months deposit in advance.

ferry scheds are here:

look at 'Central - Yong Shue Wan' and 'Central - Sok Kwu Wan' for Lamma Island service. Browse the site for typhoon regulations

And also remember, that if the ferries are not running because of typhoon then most likely your lessons will be cancelled too.

thats all fine and good, but if you go to work at 730 under a T3 (ferries running) and it turns to T8 (ferries suspended), suddenly your stuck on the island with no way to get home...

I have an extra room to rent out, located in Island side.

Rent $3,500 per month.

Do you prefer to share flat? if yes, you can take a look.

C.Y.- I don't mind sharing a flat at all and 3500 is in my price range. I will certainly take a look when I arrive. Let's correspond privately at your convenience via private messages. Thanks!

If you could spend HK6000+ bills inclusive then i've got a small but absolutely decent 2-bedroom flatshare in a prime location in mid levels central, under 5 minutes' walk from the escalator and soho, and 2 more mintues to central or sheung wan.
