Regardless, stupid or silly both imply that the tutor is not doing his/her job and is trying to blame the child. How old is your kid? If very young, you probably want to handle it differently from if your child is older. [I remember my mother once intervened in a little spat that my brother was having with us -- when he was 21! Neither of them came out of that situation looking good.] Is there another tutor available for the course - maybe you can just let everyone save face by calling it a personality mismatch.

well, child told me the other day that tutor called her stupid, and was quite upset.she is only 6.
i asked what did she say?child told me:i asked her how to do the questions and she replied,im not going to tell you because you are stupid.'Child told me another scenerio, where tutor called her stupid because she cant do the job.
i was very furious but was very calmed when i called up the center. In the end, after i posted this thread,we-the center and me- will decided to change another tutor,(Yes..despite this ,im still signing her up with the same center, because i think they are good..*ahhh..sign...)but for time being there is no available ones till after july at least where they can plan a new timings..
am i doing the right thing?i felt i didnt really fight for her,i felt i should be roaring at the center, demanding an explanation(which i did but very nicely..) fiercely..mabbe if i see myself as making a really big fuss,i felt that im doing something right..geez..

well, I suspect is the teacher a "chinese" ?
The word is used quite often in "chinese" teaching culture, with no negative meaning, but as a way of teachers venting their frustration. However, I know it is very negative and "insulting" in the western culture teaching world....

Katetam, I don't think Chinese teacher uses the word 'stupid' on student in their teaching culture. You must have make it up in your own narrow mind.

Nope, used to it since childhood.... went to top girls' local school, and so did my siblings, and relatives, and cousins... (before I left for Canada when I was still in primary school, thank goodness!).....but as of now, my students who are in top brand schools, there are still teachers who insults their students with words like "stupid", "dumb", "useless"....
Even "sisters" from certain name brand schools....
Not at all made up by my mind... and it's definitely not narrow.
I think you need to broaden your exposure in this culture, FKKC.
If you haven't met a chinese teacher that used that word, then you are very fortunate....
I agree with Cara.... "silly" is not a terrible word, I think when used in certain context, little children actually will laugh off certain "situations"....
I use "silly" in my lessons too.... sometimes.
When I was young, in the top notch girls school, not only did my Primary 1 teacher yelled, and screamed at us with terrible "names"... she would grab our ponytails and drag us to the front of the class and tear our hair. I still remember one scene vividly, my classmate had a bunch of hair ripped out of her skull.
Yes, now I realize, it is child abuse. But I witnessed it since I was 6 years old, and I still hear about it right now from my own students....

Agree with Cara, but the question is not whether this tutor should be teaching or not, that's not with control of the OP. The OP can only either quit the course, or change teacher.
I think according to the situation described, the word "stupid" isn't even my greatest concern, I think if a child feels he/she cannot ask the teacher for help, then it doesn't matter what the teacher says to the child, it is not acceptable!
Point is whether OP wants the teacher to be fired, can pursue this with the center, or ask the teacher to apologize to the child.
One teacher at an international school I know, threw a stool (children's plastic ones) at a child that she was angry at. All the kids in the class witnessed it, when child went home to tell parents, parents pursued it with principal, asked the other children as "witness" .... the teacher was fired the next week after invesigating the case.

Look everybody, I have no reason to lie about my experience, and my observations. I am not saying it's acceptable, but I am saying that in "chinese local" school, even if one came across a teacher who was this way, parents and students accept it, and the teacher would get away with it before someone really had enough and takes it to the principal.
I have no idea why I am the object of attack here, calling me "narrow mind", and "double standard" and "hiding behind culture shield , Ridiculous?"
It's just bad as calling a child "stupid" isn't it ? When all I am doing is explaining that it's possible why there is such type of teacher around a school or center.
And OP has no power except either change teacher, quit the course, and ask for an apology and let the head of the center/school know about it.
Most importantly, explain to the child, in no way he/she is "stupid". The teacher used a "bad" word and an "inappropriate" word on him/her. The teacher should help a child to learn, and explain to the child, mommy will find another teacher who is going to be more helpful.
