my son is 2.6 years old and isn't speaking much. I haven't been concerned because even though his speech is delayed I know he understands everything we speak 9bilingual) and responds with actions. He does get frustrated if we don't understand what he wants.
We went for the interview and he doesn't like strangers so didn't respond to the principal much. He was upset that he wasn't allowed to go and play in the playground so he was making a fuss and shouting. That prompted her to believe that he doesn't understand anything and he has problems being in a social environment and she doesn't want to take the risk of accepting a child that will disrupt other students ! I haven't taken him to formal playgroups but being my second boy he interacts with his brother's friends and a lot of kids who come to the park everyday to play. He can be stubborn but that doesn't make him disruptive does it ? I'm quite upset with her thoughtless comments and rude attitude. Made me think she was refusing simply because I haven't sent him to her school for playgroups.
This school was my first choice because of proximity to my home. At this time it's too late for me to apply elsewhere and I'm at a loss what to do
any wise words to help a distressed mum ?

Thanks for responding cara, I was hoping to hear from you. It's not that I think playgroups are not necessary. It's just that she seemed to imply that I should go to her school's playgroup to gain admission. I know playgroups can be a great introduction to the real thing, but getting into their playgroup has been difficult due to many reasons.
Anyways, I'm thinking it's best for me to wait a while longer and help my son by making sure he is ready for school environment. And I think with the principal's attitude this school may not be the best choice to give him the start he needs. It's also the same school my older son attended and he loved it there so I guess I didn't stop to think if it's right or not for my younger son.
Can you give me more details of your playgroup cara ? I have always agreed with your views so maybe that would be a good place to start. Don't want my son to end up hating school. Please pm me. Thanks
