Online expat grocery?

Hi - I remember ages ago when I arrived in HK there were a few UK or Antipodean online groceries where you could buy brands/comforts from home.

Does anyone know if these still exist or have they all closed down?

My kiwi husband is craving his condensed cream/onion soup chip dip ....

Hello,

I noticed that the Gourmet (Taste chain) supermarket in the basement of Lee Gardens, CWB had the french onion soup mix in stock the other day. Add a little low fat sour cream or low fat evaporated milk with a squeeze of lemon and there's your hubbie's dip.

Another alternative is to make a home made one from scratch yourself, it's actually very easy. Very finely mince some brown onion, sautee until cooked. When cool, stir the onion into low fat sour cream with 1-2 tablespoons of onion powder and lemon juice. Add salt/more onion powder to taste. Voila!

(passed my hubby's tastebud test last week, Yum)

Don't know if it will help with this specific query, but here's my list of places to buy "good and/or foreign" food in HK.

Shops:

- Great – Bottom of Pacific Place (Admiralty). Has “everything”.

- CitySuper – IFC Mall (Central) and Times Square Mall (Causeway Bay). Smaller than Great but still quite fine.

- Gourmet – Bottom of Lee Gardens (Causeway Bay). Smaller than CitySuper. It’s ok but I’d rather go to Great or CitySuper.

- Oliver’s – Prince’s Building (Central). Quite small and exclusive.

- Three-Sixty - Top of the Landmark Building (Central). “Organic” image but frankly I find it a bit overhyped.

- Gateway – Corner of Wing Lok Street and Des Voeux Road Central (Sheung Wan). American foods.

Online stores that deliver:

- http://www.aussieorganics.com. Weekly delivery of vegetables and fruit. Also a limited but good quality selection of fish and seafood.

- http://www.south-stream-seafoods.com/store/index.html. Mostly fish.

- https://www.meatmarket.com.hk. Mostly meat.

Pricing is a tricky subject in HK and the "normal" groceries aren't always cheaper than the "upscale" ones. For example parmesan is cheaper (and better quality) at Great compared to Wellcome.

Hi HKHelp - had to laugh as my kiwi bf also had us running around one Sunday for the Onion dip and cream to make his dip. Unfortunately we had no luck finding it anywhere here. So now its a must have item when friends and family come from NZ (along with vogel bread and peanut slabs).

Also just FYI, its reduced cream you need (not condensed cream) :)

I'm in cara's camp. I do the "normal" shopping at our well stocked Wellcome, but at least once or twice a month I hit Gateway, City Super, Taste and Great.

next time you feel like a daytrip, head out to Discovery Bay for lunch, strolling, then load up at the Park 'n Rob there, now known as 'Fusion'...lots of western foods

Thanks all. We've been here some years so know about all the Great/CitiSuper/Taste places. But these are specific brands that for some reason I never see in HK. THanks Shotcaller ... it's reduced cream ......:) We've even asked in the NZ shop in Wanchai a few times for them to stock it but it never appears.

I know you can buy any old onion soup and to be honest it's probably much nicer with sour cream ... or a proper made from scratch recipe but sometimes you just want the highly processed, UHT taste from home I guess!!!

Anyway - thanks all for the tips!

I'm in Cara and expat38's camp. Wellcome for the everyday, the rest I scout around, generally between CitySuper and Gourmet for the proximity.

Are there any western style 'Farmer's Markets' here? Where you can buy home baked goodies etc? Or where you can set up your own stall?

"But these are specific brands that for some reason I never see in HK."

Yepp. That's just the way it is. I guess in any place that is not the country of origin. I certainly don't see many Swedish foods here, except the selection at IKEA. ;)

Then again, think of all the Asian stuff you would never see in "the West".

But where in those places can you find good wholemeal bread? We found acceptable bread at Great, but cannot go there every day. Is there any other store chain that has good bread? My husband even tried to make bread at home!!

Same brand at Taste and Great. "La Rose Noire". Also used by Wellcome.

As for making bread at home, don't knock it. ;) I used to all the time in the US with our big kitchen appliance. Or you can buy a bread maker.

$50 for a loaf of bread? I think I'll continue baking our own!!

Though, our bread consumption here seems to have made way for our rice consumption... odd! :)
