Does anyone know where is the best place and most reasonable cost) to purchase granite tiles in HK? Would they be better than porcelin and ceramic tiles. Any approximate cost for installing tiles in HK?
I am wondering if changing the current parquet flooring to ceramic or garnite tiles will be cooler and easier to maintain? Any views is appreciated.
Many thanks.

a friend had a water pipe burst and flooded the flat. they were lucky they had ceramic tiles. if they had wooden floors, the damage would have been more intensive.

On the island side, you can try Lockheart Road. They have fairly good quality.
On KLN side, try Reclamation Street towards MongKok stretch.

Thanks Huggy for the advice. Will have a look at the tiles shops in Mongkok. What exit is the best MTR exit to take? Are heated towel rails expensive? I am told that it costs about $35 psf for labour charges to lay the tile. Is that reasonable?
Thanks again.

Try to have a look for the towel radiator at the shops "H2O" but check the origin of manufacture ( some of this are China-made which are functional but not good in material quality and craftmanship. They have many shops at Lockhart Road, Wanchai and I guest they have shops in Mongkok too.
Another recommendation is products from New Zealand. My client purchased one in a sanitary ware shop at Wanchai Lockhart Rd. in between Tonnochy Rd. and Steward Rd. , sorry to miss the name, which was very good in quality.
As remember to check the wire outlet location whether fit your power socket and if neccessary to have independent switch.
F.Y.I. it cost almost HK$2,xxx - 3,xxx depends on the size.

Hi Huggy,
Trotted down to Portland Street yesterday and had a field day lloking at the tiles and bathroom accessories. Have not ventured further to Bute, Fife or Reclaimation Street yet and will hop along soon. Thanks for the experience - prices not that cheap for good quality imported tiles but still a good vareity. Thanks again.
Saw some kitchen designers also - my goodness, never knew it cost so much for a kitchen top and built ins without the appliances!!

huggy, how bad are the quality of the non imported tiles?

Pls. be noted that not all local China made tiles are bad in quality. As by my experience, some China made tiles can be better in quality than italian. Just depend on the unit price.
Normally ceramic tiles at over HK$2X per s.f. will have a moderate quality already but of cause a reliable shop you need to source for.
Remember the basic rules, the more you give, the more you get!

Yes, ask, ask and ask! However for reliable shops only. As I know there are too many tile shops in Mongkok providing different quality source of material. It's quiet hard to define which shop to be honest and high standard of source since their major sales targets are not the end user. They are target to the contractors whom can achieve them in large sales volume.
I'll suggest you to walk around at Lockhart Road Wanchai instead because the main sales target are the end users so the product they promoted are much better in quality to achieve better reputation. I've been sourcing in Wanchai for years in different shops and most of their products are worth(of cause depends on the cost).

I guess what is equally important is not just the quality of the tiles but also the labour and workmanship that goes into laying them. I have seen the workmanchip of some contractors I was recommended and they didn't seem impressive. Head tiles that 'pop' up after a while too. What the cost of a good tile contractor?

Thks Huggy
The fact is the products they display and promoted in Wanchai shops seems to be more better in quality w/. higher in unit price that seems they've scan the product for the end users.
Hi marcusboy,
pertaining to the workmanship, most time higher will get better outcome, however some unreliable contractor will only take all the price difference to his own pocket without hiring better labour team. Choose a reliable and honour contractor by reputation or recommended by Architect or designer.
The optimal labour cost I guess be around $4x-$5x for wall tiles. If large volume of floor tiles applied, say the living and dining room, the labour cost will be much cheaper for floor. Besides, almost 1X% surcharge will be applied for mosaic tiles.
